Since here in the U.S. it's black history month my question is is it still a good idea? Basically it was compensation for all the hell we as a country put them through with slavery and the whole civil rights issue. Now it just seems to favor them over everyone else. Besides, we nearly wiped out the indians and they don't even get a history day, let alone a month. In todays world black history month seems out of place since everyone now is about equality. Equality would be removing black history month and instead just have a month where everyone tries to learn about other cultures so that way one isn't favored over the others.

I don't care, to be honest. The only black people I know don't really give a damn about it, and neither do I.
I didn't know it was black history month until you told me, either, so that is how far it gets me.

It's a terrible idea, it only furthers the ability to play the race card. Like when a black guy accuses you of enslaving his people, firstly, that was 200 years ago, secondly, I had nothing to do with it (if you knew me, you'd know that my family is south african and Austrian), and thirdly, you've just threatened to stab me if I ever look at you again, when I was talking to the guy behind you. Bastard.

I'd still side on keeping it, but also consider the possibility of having months for other minorities; relgious, cultural or racial. After-all we already learn about majorities history all the time so it's good to get other perpectives every now and again.

I've never heard any black person, or any minority actually, use "the race card" as you call it, forgive me but it sounds like someone here is a little bitter over a past experience, maybe?

They use the race card all the time, but it depends where you're from. I'm in a community college, so we've got our fair share of chavs and 'niggas'. To a chav, anything is a sign you're 'starting', and to a 'nigga', everything is racist. But yes, I'm bitter, since that was two days ago. Well, bitter isn't quite the word; more like 'terrified'.

I reckon they should change the name and make it a celebration of this guy...

This historical celebration is now diamonds!

It actually seems racist to have a month about a group of people, soley based on their skin color.

To me, the situation is kinda like that one friend you have that always tries to one-up you with how bad his day has been. He may be a great person, and you may feel sorry for him, but it just gets a bit annoying.

Nobody really cares about Black History Month. Just like how no one cares about Jazz appreciation month in April. Still, its nice that teachers and public speakers stress the importance of African Americans on American History, but it would be better if they did it all year long.

Let's keep it, just because it amuses me very much.

Am I the only one who realizes how ironically stupid it is that we singled out a month exclusively for black people to prevent black people being treated differently?

Don't they share it with breast cancer awareness month?

I don't really care either way. I get some affirmative action stuff sent to my computer at work every once in a while about it, but other than that it goes off unnoticed, with the occasional store selling 'African-American centered books and movies' during Black History Month.

We still have legitimate racism problems in this country, especially in the lily-white suburbs like the one I grew up in, where the N-word is still acceptable dinner conversation shorthand for "anyone darker than Kim Kardashian" in a lot of homes.

I learned that there was more to black people than Chuck D, the Fresh Prince, and all the stories about violence and gangs I saw on the news thanks to my history teacher (a Mr. Van Driessen from Beavis and Butt-head type, and dear gods am I ever dating myself with these references). He taught all about black contributions to America as a whole...then turned us loose to watch the black kids bused in from Boston in my suburb's forced-busing (sorry, "school integration") program act like every negative stereotype that Chris Rock talks about in his "Black People vs. (N-word)" routine.

Oh well...can't win 'em all.

I am a little sick of Black History Month because it is one of the few months that I can predict that if I disagree with a black person on any topic, I will either:
a.)Be accused of being racist
b.)Be blamed for bringing slavery to America simply because I am white
c.)Have to sit through the stories of how the other students lives are oh-so-difficult because they are black.
I get that there are still a few differences in how black and white people are treated by society but the way that people talk about it at school makes it sounds like the cops are still out there with fire hoses.

I didnt really think there was that much Black History that it needed its own month. Always seemed to me like you could blow through it in a day

My problem with black history month comes from a) the fact that more than one black person has given me grief for being white b) it's special treatment when everyone's supposed to be equal c) the Civil War wasn't fought over slavery and it was going out anyway and has been over for about 150 years now.

I was OK with black people being proud that the first black president was elected. Sure, this was a huge step in civil rights. I also think that from now on, if I hear any black person say, "It's because I'm black." I want to hit them so hard they go back to before the civil rights movement when those words had merit. The US now has a black president. I think the whole, "The white man (or The Man) is putting me down." argument pretty much lost all validity.

Not saying racism isn't still out there. I see it every so often. Also, if you don't want to be treated like a thug, don't dress/act/speak like one.

Edit: Also, if you insist on having black history month, I want white history month, the United White Guy college fund, and the same thing for every other minority. If you want equal, that means no special treatment. Period.

I agree with you here, because alot of what makes Black History Month what it is involves looking at the past and showing how bad the rest of the nation was.

Yeah we get it we were pretty rude bunch but lets forget the past and focus on the future.

The funny thing is last year my school put on a Black History Program deal that was going to end with a student dressed up as Martin Luther King Jr. quoting the I had a dream speech. The problem arosed when the guy who was supposed to play the part forgot to memorize the speech, and then absolutly no one else in the program knew it at all. So they had to get some white girl from theater to play the part, and they ended up putting as much black makeup on her as possible. The whole african american group in the student body was outraged. It was incredibly funny.

We don't have it here in the UK (at least i don't think so). I don't understand why a certain group of historical events would be confined to one month of the year.
Exactly what happens on black history month, is it part of the curriculum?

hmm i'd rather like a British upper class toff month.

When I was a kid, I never enjoyed Black History Month, mostly because my school taught it the same way every single year. Every year we would learn again about black history, and it got really boring after the second time. Yes, white people were assholes to black people 200 years ago, can we please move on?

Freeman has spoken, and his word is law. This thread is over.

But in all seriousness, I agree wholeheartedly with this clip. It's just stupid to have a month dedicated to the accomplishments of members of a specific race. History can't be segregated into little pieces; it has to be studied as a whole.
