What about The boys are back in town by Thin Lizzy. I reckon that anyone born in the 80s will have heard the song at least once

I'm no stranger to rock, not my favourite genre, but I've heard my fair share. Yet I have never heard this song. Listened to it on Youtube, didn't ring a bell.

Oh, and it's actually pretty boring. Just sayin' is all.

I was born in the 80s and I have no idea what you are talking about, I've never even heard of Thin Lizzy before. Perhaps I actually have heard the song in question, but I certainly couldn't associate it with that name or artist, and given this is a thread about "recognizable rock songs", I'm going to say no, that song does not qualify.

[small]Let the record show that I've at least heard of all the other songs people are suggesting (except the fellow talking about most recognizable metal songs and bringing up black metal, since that's like talking about the most recognizable rare stamp to a crowd of non-stamp enthusiasts), so it's not that I'm just oblivious.[/small]

It's basically progressive rock, which you will either love, or be completely baffled by the fact that people intentionally listen to it. My favorite rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody is the Weird Al one, where he just sped the whole thing up and set it to polka music, heh. It says a lot about the lyrics when a fellow who specializes in making humorous parodies of songs can just sing the song as written and make it hysterical.

You most likely have heard Thin Lizzy, but you just dont realise it. If you search for The boys are back in town on Youtube then its really likely that you will recognise it.

Beside its not really your place to decide what qualifies or not, I mean if the majority of people on the thread dont know who Thin Lizzy are then I would accept that, but the start of the boys are back in town is a very easy to recognise.

Thin Lizzy sold millions of records over the years and god knows how many best of Rock and Roll type albums contain their songs. Hell, if you listen to Metallica then you may have heard their cover of another Thin Lizzy song Whiskey in the Jar. So you cant really sit there and say that it doesnt qualify JUST because you haven't heard of it.

I'm gonna go ahead and say that I do not know what Bohemian Rhapsody sounds like. If I ever heard it, it simply wasn't memorable enough for me to remember it.

EDIT: *watches it on YouTube* Oh. It's that song. Don't like it at all. Bah.

Its the most recognizable, and the best.

You have to give Queen credit, they where masters of there craft, making great rock.

I would argue that Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven is more recognizable.

That is, of course, unless we factor in either Elvis or Beatles songs, whose "rock" roots would certainly be argued by most folks nowadays.

Probably, but the most recognizable song for me has to be Back In Black, because I heard it the most when I was younger.

Sure I can, because I'm a music nerd with a ginormous ego, the category in question is "most recognizable" - that is code for "something people still talk about or that which is used in other media with such frequency that not knowing about it is the exception, rather than the rule". Kids these days with appalling deficits of music history trivia still have a better than even chance of knowing what the hell you're talking about if you mention Stairway to Heaven or Freebird. You will get blank stares of incomprehension if you ask them about The Boys Are Back In Town.

If you believe otherwise you are suffering from delusions that classic rock is still culturally significant, when in fact it's actually "old people nostalgia music" and still 'popular' because it's what the baby boomers listen to to pretend modern music never actually happened.

Anyways, we're talking about an Irish hard rock band formed in 1969 that only had 1 hit album here in the states (from which the song in question derives) - you seriously think they are in the running for 'most recognizable' when competing against say... anything the Rolling Stones did ever? Or the various other bands that literally everyone who does not live under a rock knows about? Ha!

Like I said - they aren't even remotely in the running.

I was going to come in and say it should be ACDC's 'Back in Black', but after reading through the thread I have to agree the right answer is 'Smoke on the Water'.

Wait, it could be Sweet Child of Mine. Or Brown Eyed Girl. Or- or- or-

Not sure now...

No, it's a great song and it is so unique that it's hard to forget, but I don't think it is the most. That would proably go to either TNT by AC/DC or Welcome to the Jungle by Guns 'n Roses. Mainly because both of those songs are well known and even if the person has never heard of the band, they at least heard of the song.
