I recently was in an argument with a friend of mine; I enjoy buying old games when I can. Whether they'd be for the Playstation 2 or even the original Assassin's Creed for the 360 that I traded in a long time ago. He said that it was pointless to buy old games when there were games, such as Arkham City, that I could be spending my money on. I explained to him that sometimes, I prefer to have various games to play rather than just buying one for over fifty dollars. If I can play over 3-4 games for the low price of 20-25 bucks, why shouldn't I play them even if they are a few years old?

So my question for you guys is whether you believe that buying old games is idiotic or simply a way to get more for out of your money's worth?

Old games are awesome. I still play Gladius on the original Xbox like it came out yesterday. And the first assassins creed was amazing too. Heck, my favorite games are all "old" games.

Of course it's pointless. It's like any other form of media. Why would I bother watching Citizen Kane when the new Transformers movie just came out on DVD? It's just common sense.

If you'll excuse me, I've been wearing these clothes for almost five minutes now and I have to go burn them.

Considering I just bought myself a PS2 a few months ago, and I am now working on stocking up on games for that system... mm, yeah, I'd say I'm pro-old-games. Just because something doesn't have the shiny new graphics, and isn't brand-spankin' new, doesn't mean that it isn't worth playing. Hell, some of my favorite games aren't even from this console generation. A great game is a great game, whether it's new, old, or anywhere in between.

...Also, your avatar is awesome, OP.

Absolutely. There are a myriad of older games that are well worth getting.

Your friend is being a bit silly.

I buy old games all the time. Either because I never got around to playing the game originally, or just because I lost the original. I am notorious for rebuying old games on GOG.com just for the convenience of having them there, instead of digging out old CDs.
In fact, the last game I bought was from 2006, Galactic Civilizations II on Steam. If I didn't pick up that I was going to buy Master of Orion 2 on GOG.com, which I already own but I wanted a digital copy.

I buy old games with relative frequency, and the "why buy old when you can buy new?" argument is horribly, horribly flawed. What if you have all new games that interest you? Or an old game interests you more? Believe it or not, being new doesn't make something inherently better than anything older than it.

Exactly! I still play Metal Gear Solid 3 on my PS2 or hell, I play Legend of Dragoon, one of the best RPGs on the original PS, in my opinion. Graphics do not get in the way of gameplay ; I'm thinking about stopping by Gamestop tomorrow and picking up Assassin's Creed 2 (my brother traded in his copy ), Fallout 3, Lost Planet and Fable II. All those are on sale and it'll cost me around $30; compared to the amount I would have to pay for a used copy of a game that was released a year ago.

And thanks, I love my avatar :3

What? You?re friend is being stupid. I buy allot of old games, it?s not pointless. Allot of older games are awesome and I may not have got around to playing them at the time. New dose not necessarily equal better, there are old games I still replay and as you said it?s far cheaper. Why would I buy a new release when I can get 4 good old games for the same price? I can't afford to buy shinny new release games all the time and sometimes I can?t find any new games that interest me.

Well games, no. I love old games. Thats not to say new games are bad, but neither are old games. As the saying goes. "If I havent played it, its new to me"

However, I take exception to films cause I REALLY hate old films. especially anything in black and white. (technically that includes Clerks as well)

But games, yeah, old games are great. Hell every couple of years I will retread on one of the old square titles like Xenogears, Final fantasy 3 for Snes, Final Fantasy (1), Vagrant Story, FF9, etc.

There's nothing wrong with buying them, and i wouldnt say they're pointless unless the main draw is something that is not available anymore (such as a multiplayer server that is closed cause a more recent game in the same series has come out).

If you were a true friend, you'd smack that fellow in the head and tell him how stupid his opinion is. Yep. This is one of those rare cases of an objectively wrong opinion.

Pointless? No.

If you like a game and you find it fun to play then it isn't pointless to buy it. It's only pointless if you decide to buy a game that you don't like.

That's the opposite to what I believe; I'm all for old films. I'm studying Film at my University, so learning about the classics is good to know in my case. I love so many old films such as It's a Wonderful Life, The Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Day the Earth Stood Still, etc. All B & W movies XD

In terms of games, I still have tons of oldies around here; for my Gameboy Color I have my Lufia: The Legend Returns. I vowed I'd never trade that in and I never have.

Also, I have to say; I haven't been on this forum long but I'm really enjoying the community!

Almost all my library consist of old games and I still buy if I can, although a few years back a cousin moved to Panama and he gave me all his old pc games (he's 40 years old).
Old games are awesome, they did a bunch of stuff with limited technology which is something that today games lack: innovation.

Although I still buy new games when I can, although I have to smuggle them in since Venezuela has a ban on violent videogames.

The argument that new games are inherently better and worth a purchase over old games "because new" hurts my brain.
