So I've recently picked up Afro Samurai and got thinking, is cell shading the way forward for games artwork? I honestly think it is, its so appealing to the eyes, and games like Borderlands show that it can be applied to FPS games and still look cool. Also I'm not one of those games are art people, it just amazes me how much I like Cell Shading :)

For some games, yes.
For others, no.
It really depends on what type of game you're trying to make.

Kind of like a half-step back, except if used for artistic purposes...

XIII was cell shaded before Borderlands. Try it.

Personally, I like the style. I think that there should be more graphical styles in games like Braid's watercolour art.

No more than shooter RPG's. Its ONE way forward. Among many.

And its been around for ages, which means it can't be "the way forward", because its not new.

XIII.... So much fun I had with that. To bad it didn't cover the whole comic.

But you know what was cel shaded before XIII?

cell shading is cool and with the current graphic, basically, plateau the only way a game can amaze now is through style.

It's really up to the devs but I can't see it being a way forward.

I just got done with talking to someone about 3D image games with glasses. I think there's far more buzz around that, but then it's buzz without a reason so I say, neither should be incorporated into every game. The second being hopefully mastered at 5 yeras down the road, tried, and flops when bad games try it, but sells 6 million copies when a master gets a hold of it.

It's good every now and again like in Eternal Sonata, Wind Waker and Borderlands.

Still cell shading doesn't seem like a step forwards as everyone is going for more realistic visuals.

Only a few games had it, XIII was the first big game to use it.

It's more of an alternative rather than a step forward.

I think cell shading would work great in Saint's Row 3 and for any game with an exaggerated world or characters.

See thats one of the things that annoy me, the more realistic visuals are, the less appealing they are (to me). They all look so bland and samey, where as Cell Shading is very perty :)

I'd like to see 3D Cell Shading D: My brain might melt though ^_^

This.

I can't imagine playing Bayonetta, Halo, Gears of War, and Ninja Gaiden with cell shading. But did enjoy XIII, Killer7, and Borderlands.

Does it matter? Are different types of graphics so revolting that it genuinely ruins the game?
I have never understood why people make such a big deal out of some games when they switch to cell shading. It works with some games and doesn't work for others.

I don't think that the cartoony style will or should ever be the only style although I am glad to see that games studios seem to be becoming less focused on realism.

For something like modern warfare 2 cell shading would ruin the experience and additionally new styles should not be limited to cell shading, both TF2 and Brink look awesome with their more abstract feels.

Cell Shading has its place in the future of gaming but I would hate to see EVERY game used it.
