It's a perfectly valid art style, and can often serve as a refreshing break from the grayish-browns of current generation technology.

Just look at Okami, for instance.

The first game was Jet Set Radio (or Jet Grind Radio depending where you live). I don't know why people forget that. The hype around it was huge. Gamers too young to remember that now??

But anyway, it popped up in a few games after JSR but never because anythign big like Dreamcast owners predicted, so I'm going to say no it's not the future of gaming.

Only for games that either want to be like anime or have no desire to be taken seriously.

It's not a way 'forward', it's been in common use since N64 and before. It is an interesting option for art direction, but not something that will ever be ubiquitous unless it inexplicably becomes widespread popular in the near future.

How is it the way forward if the technology has existed for many MANY years.

Technology is the way forward, utilizing a systems hardware potential and reaching the limits that the software can achieve. Innovation and quality.

Cell shading works fine for many games, but I don't see how its the 'Way forward'. Besides, I'm not a huge fan.

It's a functional graphics style and it looks good if used right, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it "the way forward".

I think cell shading would work great in Saint's Row 3 and for any game with an exaggerated world or characters.
I don't know, I think Saint's Row looks fine the way it is with it's rubbery toy soldier look.

I honestly liked the look of the last Prince of Persia game. I didn't like the game as much nor the character design, but all the dreamy water colours were pretty fancy.

REALISM: but still dieing from being shot in the foot.

OT: games should not being useing any one type of graphics. hyper realism, cell shaded, pixel stylized, and the many other styles should all be used. Im rather happy we are taking a break from our expodition into the uncanny valley. I feel like I have more to say but I cant seem to think of it at the moment.

Scarves. Only for people who want men or have no desire to be taken as masculine.

It's only your perception (and anyone that shares your view) that doesn't see it as having a place in a 'serious' game. What would a 'serious' game be, anyway?

I despise cell shading in games. It's the worst artistic choice. (Borderlands and Prince of persia are stylised) Cell shading is a technique to give 2d media, like comics, the illusion of 3d. What happens when you use that technique on a 3d model? you get bad artwork, poor shadow placement and bizarre lighting by extension.

I think that Cell shading is a good alternative for appropriate games. Although I hated Borderlands, I though that the characters were all better because of the cell shading process. i also think that Crackdown was better because of the cell shading.
