I don't know if I'm alone on this, but I think it's more than just an economic threat...

I'm more worried about what will happen when the Chinese become the next bully in town. Those who can, force policy; just ask the U.S, Russia, the U.K, etc., but the Chinese have a scary way of dealing with shit.

I can only hope that they do, in fact, end up building a strong middle calss that grows up to have some pull to keep the government in check (and hopefully they'll do better than the U.S based middle class, that's for damn sure).

Yep. And good, I don't agree with China at all, but I'm all for shaking things up, and I'm tired of the US being the dominant world power. And if they were to have another revolution to change them from being totalitarian basically capitalists to pure proper communism, I'd be even happier.
Wouldn't we all.

Only if people get it into their heads that the US should cut off trade with China. But then, that's more stupid politicians being an economical threat to the US than China itself.

The US and China's economies are symbiotically linked. If one gets disrupted, so goes the other.
We have plenty of them here. Things will get out of hand soon.

Because of globalization all countries are linked however most western countries depend on China for their manufactured goods. Look at Britain, 100 years ago we pratically made everything and now we don't even make cars. Relying on a commercial economy alone is dangerous as the past year has clearly illustrated. But globalization causes links which means that if a country took their ball and walked off with it then they would also be in a financial problem.
If I were the US government however i would stop thinking we were still in a Unipolar system as there are at least 5 countries which are rising to super power status and will probably be there in the next 10 years. The sign of a super power is when none of the other big players moan about your human rights record it seems.

Business in layman's terms is exactly what China is doing to the USA:
"Make what the other guy's making, only faster, cheaper, and more."
Examples? All the outsourcing to cheap(<$.25/hour) foreign(Chinese) labor(sweatshops). AKA Nike, Walmart, Converse...it just goes on and on and on...

Since the US is so heavily in debt to China, It would not be beneficial to the chinese to allow the US to fail. So while it may be a threat China needs the US to succeed to pay off all that money they owe them.
