I don't really care. I don't even care if the industry crashes again (if that's even possible), honestly. There are plenty of indie devs already on the interwebs and they are hauling ass to advance the medium in their own terms (at times even for free), without the bindings of publishers orbiting around them day and night (though that's not always a nice thing). I can do without the experience of AAA titles if push comes to shove.

Gaming PC: 1000 $
Xbox 360/PS3: 250-350 $

THIS is the main reason why consoles are taking over the gaming industries.
You know there are enough console vs pc topics here that most people won't fall for the basic lies right?

What? Dying?

No way! If anything, consoles are going up as with the recent announcement that Bethesda is trying to get mods onto the console versions of Skyrim, this could mean the breakthrough that gives consoles the modding support that we PC gamers have so long held over you.

Okay, that's hopeless optimism. But I really do hope that's what happens. Even if it is incredibly unlikely. I'd like to see the joy of PC modding mixed with the accessibility and relative fool-proof-ness of consoles.

Tell you what, I'll do the math this time instead.

$450 ($430 after mail-in rebate on graphics card). CPU benchmarked as adequate for gaming. Graphics card runs crysis "avg 35 FPS all settings Very High with 4xAA @ 1920x1080" from feedback. Includes windows, and assumes the only part you will re-use is the monitor.

I'm sorry you're so dumb.

Sorry, I had to take a long pause to make sure you were serious.
No No No No console gaming is far from dying.

Before I make a long winded explaination, let me just explain one thing.
Console gaming and computer gaming are different.

Consoles are met to endure without upgrades for long periods of time. This is very attractive to someone who doesn't have a gaming computer or who doesn't want to have to upgrade their computer in order to run certain games. The market won't die and isn't dying because of the simplicity and general low cost of a console. Just plug it in and play your games.

None of the platforms are dying. They're not even evolving. They have things evolving off of them, but the PS3 and 360 are not dying because of Kinect and Move, and the PC is not dying because of Facebook games.
Ugh... facebook games. -_-"
I think I've found like 2 decent ones, and one of them was a direct ripoff of PokeMon.

Home console gaming dying? No. PC gaming dying? No. Handheld gaming dying? Well...

Smartphones and iOS apps and 'dollar games' are killing the handheld market, simply because people are finding it harder and harder to justify a £30 title (especially among the mountain of shovelware) for something they could pick up for 99p to £5 on an app store, and as smartphones and iOS systems are mobile devices, it's classed as mobile gaming. Not only that, but if you already own a smartphone or iPod touch, or iPad or whatever wouldn't you rather just get a few 99p games for that rather than shell out another £250 for some new iteration of a handheld like the 3DS or PSP NGO AND be expected to pay for games for those same new systems at £30 a-piece? You can of course justify it as a gamer, but what about casual gamers? Mums? Girlfriends? Younger audiences?
Eh... I don't really agree with that one. Nintendo has owned, and continues to own the handheld market. People point to Nintendo's decreased market share over the last 2 years, but it's only decreased from 80% of the market to 75% of the market. That's still dominance. Additionally, the sector that they're "losing market share in" is exploding, so their revenue has actually increased despite a decrease in market share. People aren't buying iPhone games instead of Nintendo games. They're buying iPhone games in addition to Nintendo games.

Smart phones have penetrated the marketplace to a much greater degree than years past, but most parents still aren't going to get their primary school-age child an iPhone. Thus, Nintendo's handheld platform is many children's only option.

Now, Sony's handheld division? Yeah, that's probably gonna die.

No, they are not dying, but not evolving either, but rather that I see them are stagnating and mutating. And I am not meaning this in the cool from Mr Mayer to Radioactive Man way. Consoles are the biggest market, and being that, it's the most aweful thing for anybody who calls himself a gamer, that we will have to wait another half decade to get rid of the hardware which is on stoneage niveau yet allready, especially if you are one of the pitfully creatures, which still prefer the pc to play games.

Not having a new console for the next five years simple means that we'll stuck with the same graphics, gameplay, physix and ai, which we allready had back in 2007 with crysis and why the hell can this be good thing for anybody, who has just the slightest aspiration for development? I mean, imagine that, a game which was released four years ago is still the best looking game in the business. And I know, I know, people say that "graphic isn't so important" ... but guess what, it isn't just the graphic which is stuck in the past, also it's the, allegedly so important, gameplay, as it is bound to the same limitation of the hardware then graphic is. A.i, physics, gameplay, everything is hold back by systems which are litteraly from another decade and yet we won't get something new for the next five years? And people are acting like that is really a good thing, as "they haven't wasted their money for nothing" ... those consoles are freaking 7 years old and for their biggest time, they cost less then 300 bugs and thats not even half a dollar / euro per day, even when you bought your first one after a freaking half decade after release, and something you could pay out your money box, if you saved the spare of your lunch money everyday. Consolres shouldn't be anything that is meant to bequeath it to your kids.

Anyway, they are not dying, even when they should.
It's not cool like Radioactive man, from the Simpson's which we got last week.

Console gaming is dying as quickly and thoroughly as PC gaming. Gaming as a form of entertainment will be completely dead by 2013. Bank on it, man, 'cause books are coming back!

I'll never understand PC gamers, it's like they think spending hundreds of pounds on some upgrade every year or so is the norm... no, console generations are long and most of the games made today don't run either the PS3/360 to their best abilities.
they all say eather that all build your own!

Really its not that hard finding a laptop that will run current gen games, is it It "Ideal"? no but it works for me, I dont need to justify my setup to anyone anyway

oh and Portability is a wonderful thing

but yeah PC gaming rocks!

andway OT: dude EVERYTHING is dying (or is it?), somtimes I find its better just to play games, have fun and not think about it

Consoles won't die for similar reason computer gaming won't die. They each have their entertainment niche that they fill and will never go away.

Facebook games?....our saviour?.....I rather PC gamign be dead in that case(which NO it is NOT)

anyway you dont need alot of power to play farmville, so if in the future you wont have PCs that can play current gen games then yeah Id consider it dead

but to be honest thsi whole thing is rediculous first PC's are dying, then consoles are dying

you know what? the industry is changign because of the internet THATS whats happening, none of this "dying stuff"

AFAIK nobody has had to upgrade a gaming PC since crysis came out in 2007. Current graphics cards are about 4 generations ahead of the xbox 360, and when I had one burn out a year ago I actually downgraded to save money because nothing challenged the one I had.

Not really dying. We are the generation who grew up on consoles and are now reaching for something different, leaving consoles to the gibbering spermazoa that plague console gaming. One day, when we are grandparents our grandchildren will be running home from the shops one day with a console we have never heard of and gawp at the graphics in amazement. I just hope the day I recoil in horror when my grandson/daughter insults my consoles for being old, I still have a strong enough heart to take it.

I hear horror films are dying. I mean I don't prefer them so i'll just assume they're dying.

Console gaming is on the rise, faster than PC gaming (although PC gaming is still on the rise.) Gaming is the fastest growing entertainment on the market today, whether its for stay-at-home moms that need their bejeweled fix or drunken frat boys playing Call of Duty.
