As a hopeless fan of racing, racing video games, and to be honest anything with any engine of any kind ever, I'm finding it harder and harder to try and defend the genre.

This isn't helped by: Issue 1) Most good/great games either dying horribly of malnutrition, 2) Being milked for every last cent without improving the game, 3) Making us wait for the next presidential election to release the bloody thing, 4) A new game becomes repetitive alarmingly fast or being bad from the start, or 5) Taking a good game and reworking it into a huge failure

To sum up my thoughts:
Gran Turismo - Issue 3
Forza - Issue 2
Need For Speed - Issues 2 and 4
EA NASCAR - Issues 1,2,4, and 5
Motor Storm - (haven't played)
Anyone except EA at NASCAR - Issue 1(x3)
Wipeout - Possible 2
Burnout - Exception
Mario Kart - Issues 2 and 4
Midnight Club - Issues 3 and 5
Codemasters racers - Issue 4(Fuel)
Metropolis Street & Project Gotham - MSR Issue 4, PGR (not played)
Road Rash - (never played)

To be short, I'm going crazy waiting for GT5 (Prologue is a glorified Demo), but I wanted to see who among ye shall admit to the gearhead gamer in you, and help me figure out if all I've been defending is worth the time of day.

I look for in a Racing game what I look for in all games: Good Gameplay.

Racing games are too expensive I usually annihilate at least one controller becuase I'm [b/]this[/b] fucking close to making it but NOOOOOOOOOO SOME DRIVER POPS OUT OF NOWHERE AND TAKES HOME THE GOLD AND PROFESSIONAL MODELS!

I'm getting away from my keyboard now for its own safety.

Since I suck at racing games, I prefer to see my car ragdoll out of control into the air.

No it is not worth it defending racing games.
It's tag, but you can upgrade your shoes.

That's it, game over.

I find it strange I chose Selection immediately without really looking at the others lol.

Crashing is cool, so is customizing your car, and even cool stunts is great.

But if the only cars you can choose are fake euro-cars and Pontiac G8's then I don't want to play it!

I guess that's why I like NFS Undercover a LOT. First game ever that includes the Chevelle, the Cuda, the GTO and many other muscle cars that other racing games seem to have forgotten.

I still wait for a game with a 77 Trans Am. Now that I think about it, why don't they make a Smokey and the Bandit video game?

What would you possibly have to "defend" a game genre against?

Forza and GT have really good customisation.. far better than NFS. Yeah sure you cant put some fagstick neoons all over your car but who cares.

I just dont see NFS any long term fun.. like you can beat someone by draggin the car all over the side rails. You can finish the game without hitting the brake pedal. Hopefully Shift fixes this...

Depends on the medium. In an arcade, I guess I would naturally look for the arcade gameplay. On a console, I honestly prefer weapon games, though I've made exceptions (Star Wars Episode 1: Racer is still fun).

Actually, Forza 2 got me really excited about new cars and now I wanna buy one. Also, I REALLY sucked at that game and took it as a challenge to get better at it. I probably got more feeling of accomplishment out of that game than I had with any other in a long time.

Did you play any NFS games between Most Wanted V.1 and Undercover? NFS:MW Black edition had muscle cars, and all those are in Pro Street.

NFS Carbon 'Own the City' has one, and I think Midnight Club LA has one (whoops, forgot a series).

People who don't see the point of driving a car and using it as something other than a showpiece or a weapon. Other than that, it's usually people who don't play games and try to figure out how to stop others from doing so. Personal problem I guess, but a problem still.

No game genre is worth defending, you don't need to prove to anybody how good something is, just enjoy it. Plus, just because somebody online says a game or genre sucks, doesn't mean developers are going to get their feelings hurt or stop making games. I myself, am not the biggest racing fan and only enjoy the more wacky and cartoony racing games such as Mario Kart. If you think the games are getting repetitive though, try to find something else to play or try out different racing games.
