I've been pondering this issue for a short while now.

See I played the first hour-ish of this game at a friend's house before he decided to sell it in after getting stuck on it. From that hour, I really really liked it. The gameplay is actually good, despite being linear (I like open-worldedness in games, but in the FF series sometimes I felt like it wasn't entirely necessary) and despite only controlling one member of the party during combat.

I like the potential the story has behind it. It's obvious some big shit's gonna be going down and that is just cool. I like the characters (even Vanille, who Yahtzee is 100% right about, the ***** is insane).

But I've heard SO MANY bad things about this game that I'm genuinely VERY hesitant in purchasing it.

From what I've heard the story turns out to be slow paced, and the characters aren't as good as they could be given the potential they have set up in the early-going. And apparently the 'Crystarium' (or whatever) feature is heralded as a totally unnecessary addition to the game.

Also it's apparently incredibly infuriating in places, as evidenced by my friend who one minute claimed to love it then decided to sell it in based on one section he couldn't complete.

SO, to all the Escapists who've played it extensively (or at least enough to have a proper opinion of it), is Final Fantasy 13 worth playing?

Not really a good quesrion to ask on this forum given the extreme bias and hatred toward JRPGs. Given what you seem to think of the game thus far I think you would probably enjoy the rest of it if it isn't too much.

As a fan of JRP's I enjoyed it, gasp!

I'd say it is worth a shot, especially if you can pick it up for cheap!

It's worth forming your own opinion of it through playing. If you enjoy FF and JRPGs, give it a go. It's probably not still being sold at full price, anyway. There are a lot of people that hate it, but I know some who say its their favorite Final Fantasy yet.

As someone who enjoys GOOD JRPG's.. No, it's not worth buying. Well okay, maybe 5 bucks and if you really don't have anything else to play for a couple weeks.

I thought it seemed pretty good the first hour too, but the characters and story quickly drag on you. I didn't even make it as long as Yahtzee did. Though maybe that's why he's the professional.

I got it for £20 about 6 months ago, and I feel it was money spent pretty darn well. You could probably get it even cheaper now.
I'll admit that you're going to be playing for quite some time before you're let loose to mess about with your party order and everything, but I personally liked the stories, characters and gameplay so much I didn't really mind.

May not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's certainly mine. Go get it.

No we just hate FFXIII (and some FFXII too but I loved that game). FFXIII takes everything good from 12 and throws it out the window. NO exploration, no towns, no realtime battles, they don't have a unique minigame/sidestory (FFIX has the cards, X has blitzball, XII has the hunts). The game only got better in the graphics department.

I still can't decide if I liked it or not.

Go for it, but only if you are willing to put up with Vanille.

If you're patient enough to sit through 30 hours of terrible before you apparently approach a playable game, then I guess. I tapped out about an hour in.

No trust me on this there is a general bias on the forum and a pet hate on the forum for FF games. Yes there are pletny of people who like it. There is a very voacl but not complete minority who despise the series and genre for highly unfleshed reasons.

I like JRPGs, but I hate Final Fantasy XIII, namely for reasons listed here [http://socksmakepeoplesexy.net/index.php?a=ff13]. It takes everything I like about JRPGs and throws them out the window. If it weren't immediately obvious, the series is just graphic whoring itself these days, hoping to catch your attention with the shiny wallpaper pasted onto The Tube.

Don't bother. You can get so many better JRPGs, like Skies of Arcadia or the Shin Megami Tensei series. I'm also looking forward to getting myself Tales of Symphonia, but I'm not sure on its quality yet.

I like JRPG's and I liked FFXIII too. I played and beat it when it came out and never had any problems with it, I liked the characters and the story, a friend of mine had the patience to get 100% completion of it. So I would say yes, especially if you liked the beginning, because I feel it gets better as it goes on.

I would say get the International version so as to make the voice acting more bearable. Otherwise, if you don't care about long cut-scenes and near endless grinding which gives...difficult to notice advancement in certain areas really. I really didn't like the game but I might give it another chance once the international version is cheap and, I have enough time to grind myself into what a level 100 character might end up being.

Not brand-new; battle system is great and the plot is entertaining, so rent it or buy used. IMO, of course.

Yeah, I agree. It's worth playing/renting, and once you know what it's like you can decide whether to buy it or not. Hell, I've played it and I still don't know if I'd have a go at it again.

It certainly is quite polarizing.

I'd say get it if you don't have much else to play. I keep getting distracted by better games and haven't finished yet, and i got it on release day.

It's not that its a bad game. I just found it to be really mediocre with no sense of pacing. Could have been tighter by being a bit shorter.

I am a huge fan of the Final Fantasy series.

Having said that, I have to say that Final Fantasy XIII is, by far, the worst of the series. It doesn't even feel or play like a Final Fantasy game.

I bought this on day of release and have played it for 15 hours, trying to like it, wanting to like it. But it's just so linear, the battles are a series of mashing A and winning, the summons are useless and you take turns in who you control.

Needless to say I gave up trying with the game, it's sitting on my shelf waiting until I have nothing better to play.
