Um...I found what might be a flaw in your poll: If the majority says that the game is overrated, wouldn't it make it not overrated then? For that matter what makes a game overrated or underrated?

Meh, I played it, completed it, I personally prefer 10, but some people call me sacrilegious or the twisted spawn of satan for it =/

Are you sure it's for this specifically or for other things, too?

You just have to remember that a generation of youngsters (myself included) grew up and one of the first games they ever played was FFVII. I mean, the game just has so many things that children just drool over, like giant swords and talking dogs.

So right now, all of these brainwashed little fanboys go around and start yelling about how FFVII is the best game ever. I used to be like that. Used to. When I was 8. I still like FFVII, but for the most part, it's overrated, just be the sheer amount of fanboyism it gets.

I think it's good. The only reason I think it's highly overrated is because of one stupid death scene.

YES AERIS DIED. Boohoo. How shocking! (NO IT ISN'T.) I know it's harsh... but, I've been holding that in for a while.
Yeah I agree, and I generally found the cinematics a lot less annoying when she was taken out of the picture.

I am a little late to the party on this one as I never played FF7 when it came out. Despite me never playing it until 2008 (thanks to some naughty downloading that may be frowned upon) I still thought it was a very good RPG and I loved the Materia system. I was surprised to find that quite a few of my friends thought it was overrated and while I do agree it's not quite the best game ever I still think the critics got it right, so what do you think?
Somebody called me Captain Obvious for this thread [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.149941#3514471].

I would now like to laugh in their face.

Anyway, your OP should be longer and more detailed the more controversial and repeated a subject you choose. That is, if you want to create something good.

Why am I saying this? Because we had an "FF7=overrated?" topic just last night. Technically, it was this morning.

I could never get into it. I tried to force myself to play it, but, after a few hours of nothing interesting, i got bored. I decided that if I'm not having fun playing a game, i should not play it.

People say its the greatest RPG in the universe, I have had so much better. The tales games for example.

The only thing it has against it is its graphics, which were groundbreaking for the time.

Keep in mind that the game is over a decade old, and was 2 generations of consoles ago.

I still play it.

Well it's all about the way you look at it, these days going back and playing it you would find that it's very over-rated (Still a brilliant game) however when that game first came out I doubt you'd say it was over-rated, it was the game that made JRPG's popular in the western world.

No its adequately rated. You cant expect everyone to view it the same now as they did during its release. If you want to appreciate it, you have to be in the time period where you see FF7 as the greatest graphical accomplishment of the time. Where the battle system was new and inventive. Nowadays people cant say its as good as they remember because so much has changed.

I've beaten it 5 times start to finish including one run where I did EVERYTHING. It's not the game for everyone but I just love it. But if it came out now it probably wouldn't be quite as good because every game they have made since is a take off of FF7 in some way. I would still buy a remake.

P.S. I hated FF9, monkey tails are not cool.

Fuck Yeah it is. Don't get me wrong, I played it, and enjoyed it, but its not anywhere as good as they said it was. I like Final Fantasy VI way more.

Played it, beat it, didn't really enjoy it.

While it's certainly a good game, its age shows. A lot. The hype is mostly people speaking through the nostalgia filter.

Oh come on, I didn't play the game when it came out but I watched my older brother play it all the way through and I remember that scene It was so sad and unexpected, then again I was about 10
I was more pissed off and shouting something to the effect of "YOU KILLED MY HEALER YOU BASTARD!" I didn't really have much attachment to aeris beyond the obvious party need. I always preferred Tifa anyway.

No, it's not, and you are a retard if you think it is. From the standpoint of somebody who was an avid gamer back in 1997, I can really say that this game won the console war for sony back in the late nineties. The game pushed the technology of the ps1 before it really even needed to go that far. Soundtrack has always been a high point of final fantasy games, but this one had some of the best. Because this game came out, it pretty much sunk N64 sales to depressing levels and ensured that third party companies came over to Sony instead of wasting their time with nintendo.

Also, it's a fun game. 6 and 4 will always live on in my heart as the FF games that got me through my teenage years, with great storylines and soundtrack that haunts my dreams. 7 actually made mini-games work in rpg's. I would say the level of mini-games was just right in 7. I really started hating the forced card games in later FF games. I would much rather do chocobo racing any day over triple triad or tetra master.

About FF12: It is a fun game as well. Main character withstanding, most of the characters are pretty cool to play. Bounties are fun and rewarding. Summons are fresh and new. The whole license thing was about as stupid as final fantasy tactics advanceds' judge system (or the entire idea of putting rpg's on handheld systems: a game should never take longer than the batteries of the system you are playing it on). I felt that many of the ideas for this game were ripped right from ff4. At least it wasn't a MMORPGer (looking at YOU ff14!).
