Many of you probably remember growing up with the original classics (Mario,Zelda,Metroid,Sonic,Pokemon,etc.). Now,the entire market is comprised of shooters, sequels, reboots, and zombies. So what do you think,is gaming really going down hill?
of coarse it is, remeber the good old days where we didnt bother with this "story" crap, where things only vaugley resembled what they were suposed too, you had to use your imagination dammit! where the women knew their place was in the villans lair to wait pateiently while the hero rescued them

no its not, a little perspceitve is required

1. not everyone grew up with the nintendo holy trinity you mentioned, not everyone has nostalgic connection to them...and *gasp* no they are not the greatest games ever, in fact ill be honest and say I have disdain for them (except metroid till the ruined it) which leads me too...

2. Seaquels- are not a bad thing some of the greatest games ever are seaquels, a good sequel can build upon what was good about the orginal...in fact those games you mentioned are ONLY seaquels which just wont go away

3. shooters, its all about trends I do enjoy a good shooter but id go mad if thats all I could play, there is variety RPG's platformers and such obviously if you think its all shooters then your not looking very hard (or at all)

plus trends change, gaming genred develop and gaming is going to go to new and exitcing pplaces for bettter and worse (plus Im sure there was a trend in the past of mainly platformers)

4. Zombies are fucking awsome...

I mean seriously screw the nintendo holy trinity if thats what you focus on you are missing out on pretty much the enitre gaming scene
It's not always nolstalgia, Vault. A few years ago, I went back and watched Thundercats...it was pretty hard to sit through them, but I still had good memories from watching them when I was a kid. That's nolstalgia.

When I go back and replay Super Mario World or Link to the Past, I enjoy the experience as much as before. When I play Mario Galaxy 2 or Twilight Princess, I enjoy those games because I like them, not because I grew up with Mario and Zelda games. Different people simply have different tastes.

And, yes, zombies are awesome
Fair enough, I admit Im annoyed by nintendo and their franchises

its really just the mentallity I was reffering too, people confuse nostalga with the idea that Zelda and Mario are some kind of pinnicle of the greatest gaming has to offer (especially when attacking FPS), when they are completley overlooking the great titles like Shadow of the colussus, Bioshock and mass effect (to name a few)

anyway this mentallity isnt common anyway, and you if you enjo nintendo and zelda good for you

The issue is that when someone does find an obscure yet genuinely good game, people ignore them in favor of something more popular.

I fall victim to it (on both sides). Everyone does.

it dose seem to be going that direction. like the comic book industry back in the 90's. it's focusing too much on the older demographic and not enough on the younger. plus the whole casual gamer scene might not last much longer either.

Sequels are not bad. Bad sequels are bad. I am tired of this associating sequals automatically with bad and unorigional.

I do think it's in danger. But games seem to be improving overall.

The reason I think it's in danger is that AAA publishers are treating it more like a business than anything else (i.e. EA's marketing and Activision's Strip-mining techniques). The problem with that is they are short term solutions.

Truly expanding the medium will require more far reaching practices that will lead to greater revenues down the road. Sadly few businesses utilize that kind of thinking, preferring the here-and-now mentality.

Yeah. Yeah, I'm pretty confident it is. New games just don't grip me the same way they did 10 years ago. It's not because I'm getting older, because there are those rare gems that still do like Bioshock, and I can go back and play games I missed from 10 years ago, and they seem like a breath of fresh air wrapped in ugly graphics.
