I say gore is overrated because it usually appears in games that require little or no skill, rather than intelligent and innovative games like Half-Life. It's also pretty stupid that games like Gears of War have their main selling point is gore, coincidentally i hate Gears of War. I traded that crap in because i couldn't stand the online lag. Seriously they made millions of dollars from the original Gears, but they couldn't fix the online lag because they spent so much time programing the gore.

I don't really pay attention to the gore. The only problem I have is if I blast someone in the face with a shotgun and they die with no sign of my shotgun blast. So I guess it's okay.

I Usually only think of gore as texture for a game, sort of making it realistic. My uncle is totally insane about gore. He hates it.

Gore in games... meh. I don't know, I think it's just used as a means of attracting players who get off seeing blood squirted all over the screen, rather than to enhance the gaming experience.

Gore in movies, though... *grins like the sadistic splatter movie fan I am*

I don't really care one way or the other. I took the Bloody Mess perk in Fallout 3 for the damage boost, not the dismemberment.

I expect that my bullets or whatever I kill the person with to show.
That being said, I hate the Fallout 3 Bloody Mess perk... I shot the guy in the leg and his body blew up...

I don't mind it, but it gets old real fast, especially if it's the only thing a game has to offer.

A lack of gore irritates me more than over the top gore. If I shoot a guy in the face, I want blood, I want gore, and I want him to shriek in pain dammit!

Half-Life had plenty of gore.
You can chop zombies in half with buzzsaw blades.
The original half-life was one of the goriest games of it's time, if you beat someone with a crowbar for long enough they exploded into pieces of red meat and bone.

But never mind that, let's just ignore all the trivial things like "facts" and "reasoning" and complain about Gears of War for a while.

Gore is not necessary to make a game good, it should only be a nice bonus for adult gamers really.

if it's appropriate then it's fine. if someone has their head chopped off and there's no blood it's stupid. i recently watched all the fatalities from the MK vs DC game and there was very little blood and i was disappointed. though the MK games do usually go overboard with the blood it's all in places where it works.

I don't mind a bit of gore now and then, but it should be a minor point in a game, certainly not a selling point.

We do seem to have gone backwards somewhat, Soldier of Fortune was more gory than most games these days.

Gore is like window trimming, or the color of your drapes (not those drapes). It can be done well or done poorly. Yet when looking at it as a whole, a house shouldn't be about the drapes, nor should a game be about the gore.

If a good game has gore, great.

If a bad game has gore, who cares?

Gore is just that little sprig of parsley next to your 72 ounce steak, if you are going to kill yourself trying to eat nearly 5 pounds of beef, who cares about the little green crap on the plate.

Games like Team Fortress 2 wouldn't be half as hilarious without judicious use of gibbing. While yes, it can be taken overboard, and become little better than torture porn, a healthy amount of physical violence can be good for a game.

The gaming audience (for hardcore games) is composed of a lot of people who like stuff that 12 year-olds like. A portion of these people are 12 and some are just immature. Gore is something that 12 year-olds like so its used as a selling point. I personally don't care. Excessive gore seems like an insult because its applying to said 12 year-olds bu and feels a bit condescending, but other then that, its an artistic choice weather guys die in a pool of blood or just ragdoll and catapult away. What you use should depend on the game (or you could go the L4D route and use both depending on the situation and enemy).

Beat me to it. I've always been annoyed by those who think gore is the only thing Gears has, especially when they use faulty reasoning.

Anyway, I think it depends. Some games don't need gore, or need just enough to give you that bit of feedback that you're actually doing something (small cloud of blood from headshot, etc). But some games, like Team Fortress 2 and Mad World, are able to use gratuitous amounts of gore for comedic(TF2) or artistic (Mad World) effect.
