Completely unrelated, but studying Ancient History at Reading and Lysistrata came up recently. Hilarious play, I'd love to have seen it performed.
Reading university? I live right by Reading!

And on topic, I think it's not culturally dead yet, but it's slowly getting there. So many people have stopped giving a shit about the country. BUT, we still have the Royal Family. Which is something right?

I'm pretty sure British people thought British culture was dead 300 years ago. People always think culture's dead or the kids are evil.

As much as I dislike it, the current inide scene is almost entirely British, that's culture right there (and it's very aware of it because it's full of pretentious trendy assholes).

I think you might have been reading the daily mail to much.
If that was for me then it fails. The opposition used that '*Name Withheld* and his legion of idiotic daily mail (don't ask me to capitalise)'. It was withdrawn as an invalid comment and I DIN'T read the daily mail.

I know I'm probably not understanding the question but just how could Britain be culturally dead? Do you guys have any idea just how many "things" an solely British? 2000AD, Peter Pan, Guy Fawkes, The Royal Family, Black Annis, The Lion and The Unicorn, King Arthur, Bad Teeth. All of them are distinctly British and refelct and influence your culture. How could you possible say that its dead?

Culture isn't measurable on a scale...

Nor is a state(an abstract notion to begin with)limited to one set of cultural values. What they mean when they say "culturally dead" is that things aren't exactly the same as they were in the past, which they want you to believe is definitly a bad thing.

It's not "culturally dead", where there is humans there is culture. What Britain is, is more culturally diverse, and that's scary to alot of people...and more than likely the source of all this Hullabaloo.

My impression is that British culture is 'dying'. There is still culture in Britian, its just not all that British. I blame immigration and globalisation.
You don't think that, through things like Dr. Who and pop VV Brown you aren't exporting British culture? Globalization has probably done nothing but expand American, British, and Japanese culture in terms of total global impact.

Why do people still insist on prefixing Britain with "great"? It's such an imperialistic anachronism.

Don't get me wrong, I've got nothing but respect for the British people, love British humour and more or less want to hug Simon Pegg, but the "Great" thing....?

Went to the theatre last Saturday to see an adaptation of Lysastrata in Wolverhampton by Actors of Dyonisis theatre company. A famous greek play about women trying to get the men to make peace by abstaining sex. I went a few weeks before that to see a creative adaptation on the fairy tale Red Shoes by Kneehigh Theatre Company, which blew my mind and was enough to make my mind restless while I tried to sleep that night.
You went to see the Red Shoes too? :D What a coincidence, so did I. I went there with my college, though I'd hardly say it 'blew my mind'. Was a good adaptation though, and the actors did the story justice.
