Before you disregard this forum, let me tell you that I am not a Green Day fanboy. I am unsure about how I feel about them. I was reading some comments on a Ramones song on youtube and realized how crazy some people are. A huge debate broke out over whether Green Day was punk rock. This begs the question, what is punk rock? Is it the quick, easy, and fast licks of The Ramones? Or the crazy, political, semi-complicated (compared to the ramones) music of The Clash? Does Punk Rock only refer to the music from that particular generation or is it a style? Does Green Day fit this style? The forum is open for your discussion.

Well when they were good they could be considered punk, which was way before American Idiot. Im not sure how to classify music any more cause everyone wants their own genre.

Yeah, sure. Let them have their bottle, nothing off my back.

Incidently never add an 'I'm a fanboy' option, as I will instantly vote it to see if it can in any way upset the poll's accuracy.

i guess it's all up to personal preference really, if you like their earlier stuff then they could be classified as punk but if you talk about their more recent stuff then i guess it's probably pop rock . . .maybe punk if it's loosely defined

All of the green day I've ever heard is pure 100% unadulterated pop rock. That said, I have avoided listening to much of it, so I might not be the best one to ask. I tend to avoid shitty bands, you see.

The problem is that Green Day used to be a legit excuse for a punk rock band, but have since devolved into wannabe rock-opera weirdos. Go listen to "Kerplunk!" "1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hour" and "Dookie". They were great punk albums, and I want that band back.

The major problem is that we're getting too fond of labeling everything to suit our ideas. We consider shit like Fall Out Boy punk, and we call bands signed to Sony BMG "Indie" based on their sound. Music has become a convoluted mess of bullshit, with a few glittering beacons of hope.

My buddy's brother is a big Green Day fan from back in the day (God I hate saying that it feels way too recent), but he's told be that the earlier stuff is better and more punk like.
But I never really heard them much until American Idiot came out and I've never been fond of them at all so I can't really say if what he says is right or not.

I'm probably as close to a fan boy of Greenday as it gets, but I wouldn't consider their recent stuff to be punk. I just lump it all under alternative. Beyond that, I just find them to be very good musicians which are very good at writing songs and albums.

They defintly fit the style. There is no doubt about that. They play fast easy to play songs that are generally about there disdain for the the goverment. But that's where the similarites end.

On the other hand they could easily be Glam Rockers. Seeing as how a good portion of there songs are about girls and parties. And before I go.

Green Day's old work was definitely punk rock. Today, it's more of an alterna-rock, but who really cares; they're a good band.

greenday isnt necessarily punk rock.

they are the FOUNDING FATHERS of punk rock. with that said think of them kinda like manowar to powermetal, or iron maiden to powermetal.

manowar and ironmaiden were heavy metal, but later the "heavy metal" they played became a new style called power metal.

greenday played a style of rock that was different and out of it evolved punk rock.
