Recently, a friend and I had an argument over weather or not "Henry Hatsworth and the Puzzling Adventure" was a work of Steampunk. My argument is that the game IS, in fact, Steampunk taking into account the fact that you not only can power up into a steam powered robot suit, but because of the clockwork mechanisms and sky ships that exist within it's world.

My friend countered that the work is NOT Steampunk because there is no ruin or dystopia at all in the game. Henry is a dapper and refined gentleman, in a world of strict code of etiquette. Clearly the Monarchy is intact, and the only thing that makes life more awesome is more treasure hunting.

So my question to the boards is - Is "Henry Hatsworth" Steampunk because it has many elements found within the genre - or must it adhere closely to the genre to be Steampunk, and has it missed the mark, becoming something else?

What say you, good ladies and gentleman?

i agree with it being steam punk, but i don't think it matters if the main character is a outstanding gentleman or if the game takes place in a ruined underwater city (BioShock refrence). Steam Punk is Steam Punk. although i admit i think it's a lot tamer then normal punk.

I say the game is too busy being an unimpressive mishmash of platforming elements with a puzzle game that feels like it was stapled to the design document to justify making what would otherwise be a scene-shifted Hudson's Adventure Island in 2009. It's fun for about an hour, max.

You shouldn't go out of your way to put meaningless labels on things. We've already got someone thinking that "ruined dystopia" is a prerequisite for Steampunk. It's not. And why should it matter anyway?

It's a Professor Layton ripoff if anything.
1) Henry Hatsworth is not an adventure game.
2) Professor Layton didn't invent the elements of Steampunk.
3) Even the characters aren't that similar.

How is it ripping off Professor Layton in any way?
