I say no, but if you mean ideas for good movies then yes.

While meet the Spartans did suck terribly and so will disaster movie there has been some pretty good new releases to balance it out.

I like how you mention Star Wars. The new trilogy made me sad. Lucas needs to be shot.

Not necessarily, and there have been some pretty good movies lately, like WALL-E, Tropic Thunder, Ghost Town, Dark Knight, and even Kung Fu Panda(Seriously, look at the reviews.).

Other than:

1) I can live the way I want to, but you have to take care of World Peace.
2) My house can be as big as I want, but we have to be concerned about Global Warming.

and...

3) I can spend MY money the way I want...but the rich people in America aren't taking care of the poor.

Hollywood really hasn't had an original idea in about thirty years.

I thought Hollywood started running out of ideas about the time they began trying to turn every comic book in the universe into it's own franchise.

Now, I don't think so. Sure there's crap and sequels everywhere you turn, but 2008 was actually a pretty good year for new ideas and new franchises. They haven't run out of ideas and they aren't going to.

Saying the best movie ideas have been done in Hollywood is like saying the last wave's just hit the ocean. Have people run out of ideas for books? No? Then there's your answer.

Because those books can then be made into movies.

I voted yes. But It might be that we are so jaded that the only way to appeal to us is try something with nostalgic value. (80's remake anyone?)

I'm pretty sure Carmen Elektra actually forces Hollywood bigwigs to make spoof movies just so she has something to do.

Hollywood has been a bit dry ideas wise for ages and it's not gonna get any better. Good writers than than come up with a decent story seem to be pretty rare nowadays so adaptations and remakes it is. It's obiously much more cost efficient and quicker just to take a story that's already been written in great depth, cut a bit out and send it straight to screen.

nostalgia has a way of taking you in with warm caring arms...then drop-kicking you and leaving you with pants made of C4 replacing your short-shorts(why is my watch ticking).

No. While there are a ton of horrible movies with bad premises, there are still good movies too. Serenity, V for Vendetta, Batman The Dark Knight, The Departed, Thank You For Smoking, etc...

they've been running out of ideas

But through sheer luck you can find small specks of diamonds in a torrent of dung
That's how I'd put it

The problem is that they're running out of ideas so they're beginning to cover bad movie plots with lots of action and violence.

I chose Kinda, but I guess I should've said yes, as I was thinking of movie makers in general and not just Hollywood. I mean Hollywood still produces unique films once and a while, but they are mostly sequels and adaptations as far as I can see.

Hollywood has found out that it is cheaper and safer to rehash the same shit over and over and make millions, rather than risk *gasp* being original and making new, fresh movies.

We've been using the same archetypes for stories for millenia. Certain stories just work, and people love them, so we take that story, give it a new shell, and sell it to the people.

Movies aren't different, but they tend to take the archetype of a story in a new shell idea literally and just remake the big blockbusters from yesteryear, and sequels.

But although hollywood is pretty much empty on the idea fuel tank, there are people out there who write nifty little things called "books" and they tend to have some cool ideas. So when hollywood runs out of its own ideas, never fear! There are other sources!

i have given up on hollywood. its all the same regurgitated shit. spielberg only makes hitchcock ripoffs, lucas is an asshole, and tarantino completely plagiarizes from anything he saw as a kid.
