Lately there have been a ton of threads on the Escapist asking various controversial questions about various controversial issues.

Not that that's a bad thing, most of these issues are ones that need to be talked about; it's just that there seems to be a new thread about these things every other day.

Am I the only one who's getting sick of seeing threads about gay rights, women's rights, sexism, racism, et cetera? Like I said, it's good to talk about these types of things, but there's a point where it just gets obnoxious, right?

Yes you are the only one in the entire world sick of seeing these threads. You are the .000000000001 percent.

On a serious note however I only find them annoying when over-done, like during the diablo 3 and ME3 fiasco where we had over 4 threads about them on the same page. At other times I don't really mind.

I think

Also I think that everyone else in this thread is a moron

OT: It's always been like this unfortunately, best to view it as background noise and ignore them as much as possible.

To be honest the old maxim applies here, if you don't like a thread, don't read or post in it. Most controversial threads are clearly marked as what they are by their titles.

I can enjoy controversial topics when they haven't been done to death. They also serve as an excellent way to figure out what posters you'd rather not associate with.

True, but it's kinda ridiculous when they're so common that you can find them at any given time in any given Escapist forum.

The OP isn't talking about honest discussion to reach some kind of consensus; they're talking about the threads deliberately designed to start pointless arguments, the kind that inflames the issue early, draws clear lines between the two sides, and pits them against each other in circular insults and repetition of talking points.

Also, it was alot worse back in 2011. It's seemed to have died down a bit with the smaller population.
Smaller population? Was there a pandemic across the forums or something? :)

On Topic:

While certain topics are being beaten into the ground (which always happens) the only particular threads that are likely to start getting OP's warnings are the "Street attack" threads:

If sky14kemea's comment means what it COULD mean, I mean. ;)

Talking about, yes. But the threads soon fill up with people repeating stuff that was gone other pages ago.

Lots of people don't want to talk or listen or learn, they want to yell their opinions at people like they are facts.

If you wade through that, you can still find some useful discussion, but the signal to noise ratio is not great.

It's called lurking or having an older but currently unused account bro. I've been here since 08 but I didn't join until very recently. And I agree with him too, the Escapist has always had threads like what the OP describes.

And OP you are not alone. Best we can do is just ignore those threads as best we can.

Ah, that was wonderful.

Anyways, this is why I generally do my "serious" posting (if those terms are even applicable) on smaller forums. Like, forums with roughly twenty active members. Those are generally much more intelligent.

Addendum: at least it's not those "The last X you Y is now Z'ing you" threads.

I blame it on the people that reply to the controversial threads, some times the controversail thrends genuinly can be approach seriously. But most of the time people just derail it or make it into a flaming war.

True but it's still annoying when you see the 50th ME3 ending thread. It just makes we wish people would want to talk about other things but these usually end up being the hottest topics because everyone wants to have their chance to restate the same old arguments which originated months ago. This is the same for the majority of the threads that the OP mentioned. They just rarely bring anything new and seem quite pointless most of the time.

No, I enjoy a good argument.
It's also rather fun to see people's opinions on things, hence the poll.
...So wait, isn't your opinion on this topic a controversial opinion that you made a thread about? I've seen numerous topics complaining about the topics of threads before, and each are as pointless as the last, aside from any interesting argument you can get out of it.

Thread-ception, we need to go deeper.

OT: I haven't seen any such threads any time recently, not that I've been looking for them... but still.

Just asking is this yet another I am so sick of the recent trend of topics thread? or is this a game? Where I am suppose to say-

I am so sick of Fallout 3 haters. They act like spoiled Star Wars fans with their whole, You ruined the original B.S. JarJar makes kids laugh...so sorry it is "racist" and "offensive".

Just in case someone missed it, that was was sarcasm.

Update: I for some reason did not see your post before finishing mine. I do not think it took me 19 mins to type out my thing, but I may not have refreshed before posting.

So to get to your topic. You are basically upset that people do not search before starting a topic? I gave the silly answer to your poll, and if you read the full post you would know why. Honestly it is something that is frowned upon by the guidelines. Report it if it bothers you. I liked the idea of it being a game. I thought I had won at first then realized, I had got it wrong. so for my second attempt.

Still sarcasm.

Is playing a sexist character in a game really so bad? I mean if you kill people does that make you a murder? You obviously can not progress with out killing. So, duh...deal with it women.

This is the internet, where nerds are nerds and using a search feature on forums is just too much effort plus noone will mind anyway because they probably want to talk about it some more.

I used to be a moderator on a gaming forum a few years ago and I'd end up locking about a dozen threads a day because people couldn't be arsed to see if someone had already made the same thing. It's just something you have to live with if the mods aren't quick or strict enough to unleash a plague of banhamsters. Keep calm and report threads.
