Defiantly not. I've never seen Star Wars and people always tell me to watch it. I've tried on several occasions but it was IMO so bad I could never finish it. Everyone knows Star Wars and if they haven't seen it, it's probably because they don't care. People have different interest and that is not one of theirs, so leave them alone.

REEERRRRRR jeesh, someone is a bit lashful towards the series.

i honestly have a friend who had never watched them before, not because he didn't care, it was because his parents were such cavemen when it came to technology they skipped straight over the vcr (yes this is true) and straight to dvd, and he never watched them (hell he missed half the disney movies as a kid...poor poor childhood), and he just watched them a couple years back after never watching them before, and he thought they weren't too bad, but was surprised by the hype around them.
My parents treated it as the second coming and the fact I didn't like it was heresy. Most people I run into treat it the same way, I only hate it so much because the fanboys always try to shove it down my throat.

I mean, they're not even going to be aware that anything was changed.
I think they would, though. The edited-in computer animation clashes so horribly with the rest of the environment.

you could apply that last sentence next to anything, i don't get why star wars deserves extra special treatment because every fanboy of everything in existence has done the same.

True, it does look ugly, but then again bad CGI that clashes horribly with the rest of the environment is pretty common place in movies that haven't been retouched at all, so there's that.

I do apply that sentence to a lot of other things. Only reason I hate Halo instead of dislike is the fanboys. I also avoid being a hypocrite and don't force my media on other people just because I like it.

If you have old VHS copies of the original trilogy then sure.

but it's a good idea to avoid the prequels or the "remastered" versions

there is a difference between "recommending" and "Forcing" on other people.

if someone asked me about my favorite movies, or star wars in general, or asked me for a recommendation on something fun, quirky,in space with lots of "pew pew", i'd give them a nod to star wars and that's that. Forcing = forcing your opinion on someone in an aggressive manner stating that your opinion is fact and cannot be denied, that is what alot of fanboy's tend to do and ruin things for people instead of making them better.

i have a feeling you are confusing the two and they are blending in to one...or you truly do have some ignorant people you live around.

That difference is an extremely fine line. If you had people recommending you to watch it at least every week and having them then ask "Have you watched it yet?" it feels extremely close to forcing. You are probably right about the ignorant people though. I mention I prefer fantasy settings to sci-fi and their first conclusion is I don't like sci-fi because I never seen Star Wars.

I wouldn't bother, I've had a hell of time trying to explain that "Episode I" isn't the first one. That and I get laughed out of the conversation when I say "The Original Star Wars Trilogy is my favorite 'movie'"...

This is pretty much what I'm talking about here. I'm not saying the viewer needs to love it as much as I think they should be given a proper chance to like or hate it. Even though I could have said at one point that I "liked" the prequel trilogy, there was always an underlying feeling I had regarding them I could never put into words (Thank you Mr. Plinket for those words). If a person were to watch one of the new movies, or the redone movies, there's a good chance they would have that same feeling, which could turn to misdirected malice towards the movies, especially if weighed against the hype machine for them.

Switch on A New Hope - original or first special edition (I own this version and it's nicely remastered, better lightsaber glows etc, and has some nice extra scenes - probably a better bet than the originals so it doesn't look quite so creaky. I know older looking special effects can be a turn off when someone is solely used to seeing movies which have been polished to perfection). If she enjoys it great, she'll probably want to watch ESB and RotJ, if not *shrugs* life goes on.

hah fair enough, i have had people pester me about not seeing the series "lost", and it does get kind of annoying after the 15th time they ask...

lol bad conclusive reasoning is bad. all i can say on that.

Yes, it should be watched at least once, if only once. It's a major cultural phenomenon that should not be missed.

Well you know what to do then... tell them you have no interest. I hate it when people lead me into thinking they might have an interest only to have them snarl at me a fortnight later for bringing up the subject.

If I'm passionate about something, and someone shows an interest, I will want to share my passion with them... in fact I'm eager to. If you show an interest, have the courtesy to entertain their enthusiasm and at least try to sample it. Most people offer their DVDs, games and books for you so you don't have to dish out cash yourself.

Before you retort, everyone is guilty of this (that is Enthusiastically advocating a subject). Raging at people or blaming the subject is a fault of your own for leading them on.

That said, if someone get's all up in a huff about your indifference then that's their problem and you should just ignore them.

OP: I would show them the Originals first, then the prequels... just to see if the long held opinion that the prequels are actually shit movies, and not just nostalgia vision on behalf of the original trilogy.

Well, I'd tell him to start with episode 4. The old ones are definitively the best!

This. Watch them all in order of release. Some of the EU stuff is pretty interesting, though most of it is just bad fanfiction IMO. Some of the games are fun too (see: KOTOR).

Yes, but don't be a gibbering fanboy about it. Don't crank their expectations up too high, the original is over 30 years old. It's very silly in places to modern viewers.

Also, only a star wars fanboy notices the changes made to the originals over the years. A person who has never seen them before will simply accept it as part of the movie. What would prompt him or her to notice the changes if they are not aware of them in the first place? If you're watching a move for the first time, trying to string the plot and dialogue together in your head and keeping track of characters and their motivations, you don't stop to think that it's odd that a 30 year old movie has modern CGI effects here and there.

oh i agree, it usually is either the person A) giving false interest and then finds them in a heap of social awkwardness for it, and they end up raging on the topic or that person when in the beginning it was more then likely their misinterest that caused it. or B) said fanboy doesn't care and is just going to feed you the info anyways.
