Not in my book.

EDIT: There are shirtless guys in skirts in Braveheart, so is that 'gay' too? Conan The Barbarian? ect ect
Except that you're only looking at one aspect of it. The extended periods of mass shirtlessness and aboard a vessel composed entirely of men helps the case, certainly, but look at Maverick and Iceman over the course of the film. The term 'belligerent sexual tension' comes to mind. And consider that in films with a male and a female character in competition with one another, the scene when they argue closer and closer to the other's face is almost invariably when they suddenly start making out.

I will always love Top Gun, it's a fun little piece of whatever. That being said, it is gayer than two mustaches fightin' over a dong.

For a Reagen-Era war movie, they got away with a lot of subtext.

Well 300 is one of the most homoerotic movies ever (lots of mostly naked hypermasculinised dudes with nary a woman in sight) but it's still classified as a testosterone pumping manly action flick. Take from that what you will.
I think you're confusing 'homoerotic' with simply being visually appealing to homosexuals. The closest it ever comes to actual homoeroticism is Leonidas' encounter with Xerxes, and that approach is rejected through sheer virtue of Leonidas rejecting Xerxes' offer.

To be honest, most aspects of "male culture" is homoerotic by definition. An example of this is the typical image of guys whipping each other with towels in the communal showers after workout or sports. And let's not even start about some cultures that are so centralised around masculinity that homosexual relations are a rite of passage that must be undergone before you can claim a woman - see the ancient Greek and Spartan traditions of young males being taken by older ones to instruct them about sexuality, or to assert one's dominance.
Wait, what? I wouldn't describe Spartan culture as 'homoerotic' in the same sense that I wouldn't describe Elton John as 'homoerotic.' Their wedding ritual alone made it clear [http://books.google.com/books?id=JgFlxZ14hkoC&lpg=PP1&pg=PA122#v=onepage&q&f=false] that the main point of encouraging heterosexual sex at all was because they would die out if they didn't make new Spartans.

In other words, it goes past homoeroticism when the regularly-applied method of reproduction is to make the woman look as butch as possible, and then put her in a dark room so the man can temporarily look past the fact that he's having sex with a woman.

I thought you meant that TV show with that old ex marine guy who made me want to punch him in the jaw every time he said "ooh rah" at first... I was kinda disappointed because I wanted to see if anyone else shared my conditioned hatred.
On topic, no not really, actually, no not at all.

Do people inject these fantasies into the movie? Without a doubt. Did I? Nope.
Wait, what? I'm referring to actual scenes, not "fantasies." The way they approach their rivalry is a male/female one in the spades, except it cuts short of them actually exploding into a bout of hate-sex. That's why it's a homoerotic subtext. If they'd started making out, it wouldn't be 'subtext.' It would just be plain old gay.

Guys with out shirts =/= Gay
Tom Cruise without a shirt + "You can be my wing man any day." = Gay

It's the ultimate bromance movie. I'd say it's pretty gay, but I doubt it was intentional. Although it has the best theme music ever. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNofXKppggQ&feature=fvst]

Incredibly homo-erotic? Yes. From scenes involving Val Kilmer making predatory biting motions at Tom Cruise to the infamous volley-ball scene, I'd say Top Gun is pretty gay. Whether it's intentional or not, I'm unsure.

A song called "Playin' With the Boys" definitely adds an undercurrent of homoerotica to the proceedings.

And no, I don't mean in the 'movie sucks' kind of way. I'm talking about the specific headhunting of homo-erotic under/overtones whether they are in there or not, intentionally or otherwise.

I mean, sure it has a fair amount of half naked men in it, but isn't that just covering all bases -as most movies do- to give the OTHER person on the date/in the relationship something to watch? Is it really that different from the romance subplots that pop up in war films all the time?

And how is it all that different from Predator, which has enough naked man-meat on display to sink a ship, yet somehow gets crowned the manliest movie ever made?

Discuss.
yes! that movie is one of mancrushiest films ever made. Not to mention it stars Tom Cruise, who, legally, is of course as straight as any common ruler, but cannot help but give off an effeminate air about him that makes him seem considerably less so.

Calling it "gay" is a bit of a stretch. It's very 80's though. And c'mon, let's be realistic...the volleyball scene in Top Gun, was for the WOMEN. Get over it. Guy's movies get that kind of fan service(girls in swimsuits washing cars, anyone?), why can't women get some eye candy too?

But it has no volleyball. It's not about the naked man. It's about the Navy...

Watch American Dad's volleyball scene parody.
