The mods are way too punishment happy.

With the implementation of the (fucking stupid) forum health bar thing bans are determined by amount of infractions rather than severity of infractions.

Oh this is going to end well. I guess I just have to post it.

That is all.
For instance^^^ the mods would consider this a low content post which used to be worth a warning. but if this guy has done this one to many times he could get banned for it.

The Escapist mods are power hungry I got put on probation for saying that Bungie has no reason to make Halo Reach any good because it's the last Halo game they were going to develop.

But in most cases Moderators on internet forums are completely unnecessary, all they really offer is a "tell on you" button for extremely thin skinned people. Maybe one in a hundred people actually deserve the ban their getting.

Here's a thought only let the mods delete specific posts and only use the ban hammer on advertizing and spam accounts.

I can see why this person was banned. The line "Was there really a point to such a stupid post like yours." is what did it. That is what we call flaming and the mods are not a big fan of it. I've never really had an issue with mod wrath, heal my record is clean.

Just remember, don't be a jerk, post more then one word, don't post porn, and don't talk about pirating, mostly what the rules boil down to. I find it not that hard to follow.

Eh mine is actually just long enough that it will probably get a pass. Unless a mod is having a particularly bad day I am probably safe. You on the other hand are probably in the line of fire for referring to the rule system as "fucking stupid." You aren't guaranteed to have action taken against you but I would not be surprised.

I think a lot of it has to do with the report system being too easy. I remember a Moderator saying that most of reports they get are people just being vindictive, petty, or some similar adjective.

(what are you doing? you're going to get banned for this. If the Escapist were to find out what you were...)

What? There's nothing going on. I didn't say anything. What's with the flag? I'M SORRY ESCAPIST! I DIDN'T MEAN TO!

lol, how perfect would it be if I got a warning for this?

but yeah, just watch your language and you should be good. we like to keep ourselves away from most of the internet (mainly the crude part), but that doesn't mean we're free from the internet's influence. We like the internet, just not all of the people on it.

I know that "Those who willingly sacrifice freedoms for security deserve neither" (or something to that effect), but I can't help but feel that The Escapist is better off because of mod wrath. Just don't post while angry, and avoid topics you know will tick you off.

Not really. Just because someone is an "idiot" doesn't mean you get to blow up at them... Unless your name is Id:
[sub]I BLOW UP AT EVERYONE, BIAAATCH!!![/sub]

That guy really blew up over a dumb, onionated remark. And since that was his permanent ban I'm going to guess that's not the first time he did something like that. I actually have a pretty low health bar because I didn't follow the rules at first. But eventually I fell into step and I've made like 400 posts with invoking moderator wrath.

And as long as you stay away from the low content posts you should be fine.
[small]Read the rules again too. They are there for a reason.[/small]

apparently not because I was just on a fetish thread.

I think it's good that the escapist is strict on the rules, the only other websites I spend alot of time on are youtube and break.com and they have massive troll armies because of their leniency.

The idea seems to be to create a forum in which actual intelligent discussions can be held. By keeping the rules strictly upheld, then the moderators ensure that another 4chan is not born on what is a good website. I come here all the time because I know that I can see quality discussions taking place. True, there is inanity, but a little is ok.

I hate to be "that guy", but you have 3 strikes in less than five months. At this rate, you'll be banned in about six or seven months...

Those were all in the course of my first week here (if I recall).

Rule-breaking isn't at a constant rate.

Doesn't seem hard.
Some people miss the second thing.

I've had my share of scuffles. But I always make it a point to be displeased with what someone does rather than what they do. And the mere fact that I got into a debate in a furry thread and emerged unscathed is proof that I'm either lucky or tactful

I feel inclined to go FUCK YOU! to be funny :)

Also I feel inclined to reply to everyone... but I don't know how you peeps would react seeing as the youtube n00bz (those copy paste anti-bieber & dislike bar guys) just found out what bumping is.

They're more harsh for sure but that's how I like it. It keeps this place more civilized and professional but still allows expression and thought provoking conversations without the derogatory slurs being thrown around. I rarely ever see the users get mad with one another and when it happens it's done respectfully. Just makes the community better overall and keeps the bad eggs from corrupting everything they touch.

No. The only reason I rather like these forums (compared to others anyway; there is still much room for improvement that's beyond the power of any moderator) is the lower tolerance for douchebaggery.
There is actually some form of discipline here. Given my own record, it is NOT difficult to follow very simple rules of conduct and trust me, I am an outspoken and vulgar man.

If you think it's too strict; go somewhere else. The Internet is full of forums with absolutely no sense of moderation or decency; this is one of the few that at least tries.

I don't think so, a lot of the people who get banned for what seems like minor examples of anger often have a history with the mods, or are just being subtle trolls. It's not that hard to stay un-punished, just treat this like the Real World, where just about everything you say you will be held accountable for. For example, 90% of MovieBob's reviews/content piss me off to no end, so what am I doing? Avoiding his forums and video's, it's not a hard concept to do. Just stay away from what you know are you're firespots, if you get easily riled up about politics....then don't go into R&P and post on every topic.

Or you could just look at this guy's post and have it all summed up nice and easy like

It's much much better than the CyberNations forums. God, air moving will get you banned there. And I have been. Five times. :3

Here? Never even so much a howdy do from a moderator. It's a very relaxed community as long as you stay within your rights.
