Now I might get a lot of crap about this topic, but let's be honest: things are different.

Back in the day where all we had was local multiplayer, we would play with only our friends, and we'd all end up having a jolly good time. Everyone already enjoyed eachother's company and the games were just a great thing to do with that company.

Nowadays, we can go online and play with random strangers who might not fit into our specific social group, and we end up playing with people who think of the game a bit differently than us. For example: amoung your friends you may have deemed a certain weapon or item as "cheap" or "unfair" and in local multiplayer you all have agreed not to use it in order to make the game more fun (and even if somebody breaks that agreement and uses it anyway you could always get up and smack him across the face), but once you go online nothings stops people from using that item and taking away from your fun.

>>>(I can't even play Call of Duty anymore because of the goddamn grenade launchers and runners with tactical knife.)

Also, in games where you can communicate with players on the opposing teams, manners never seem to be an issue. Xbox LIVE is filled with people constantly shouting racist/sexist/homophobic things at eachother. This is because there's going to be zero negative effect on their lives by you not liking the way they act (If that person was in the room with you you could always get up and smack him across the face). This also leads to more cases of the above problem, and people use cheap weapons because they're not being rude to anyone they really know.

>>>(This is evident in xbox live games like Halo and Call of Duty, but a lack of manners bothers me the most in StarCraft II for the computer. The last time I played a person other than one of friends who actually bothered to say "gg" or "good game" was when I played an AI to shake off the rust between then and the Beta. I also hate when Terran lift up one of their buildings after they've clearly already lost and drag the game on a just a little bit longer.)

These are really just two examples of why I think online play isn't anywhere near as enjoyable as local, but I'm sure if I put my mind to it I could put a few more out there. However, I believe all these problems can be solved with a swift blow to the head and a trip back to the main menu in the case of a local game, so I suggest the removal of a ranking system so that we can restart the game the second some dick shoots me square in the face with an rocket launcher, and an attachment to next generation controllers that violently electrocutes anyone who has gotten enough votes by other players to have them thrown out of the game.

...or you can just do what Yahtzee does and only play the single player.

I completely agree with you. The only reason i pay for live anymore is to play with friends and to get the occasional achievement, but little 5 year olds playing M rated games fucked it up =(
Plus the only way to have fun with it is strategy, but no one will do it except friends but your fucked if your the only one of your friends who fucking bought it. Yes i mean you Adrien.

It Really annoys me when you spray someone with half a clip and they knife you from ten feet away.

Its already been discussed. ITS NEVER ONLY YOU .... in ANYTHING.

OT: Agreed that most 10 year olds and such are potty-mouthed bed wetters in multiplayer but then the thing is, you don't always have a group of friends available all the time to play local multi anyway, so atleast online multi is a good alternative.

If this bothers you much though, why not play a password protected game with only friends?

Or yes, there is always the single player option hanging there on your screen

The lack of decency in online multiplayers is astounding. But the community varies with each game. The people who play MW2 for example are a bunch of twats.

Personally, I'll take an engrossing single player experience over multiplayer any day. Take SCII for example. I usually play with my best friend but his laptop shit the bed. I haven't finished the campaign yet and every time I consider doing a couple multiplayer matches I end up back at the mission select screen. I just can't tear myself away!

10 years Everquest..
another 2 into Lotro..

My best and closest friends I met online. We are all over North America and its a ritual that we ALL hook up at the same time at least once a year for what we call Geek weekend. That does not include the many many trips we all make to visit, go camping, Visiting for vacations, just due to distance its not always possible for everyone.

I met my Wife online, and the average age of our pirate crew is High 30's with many of us having kids that are Graduated! Most of our Kids are involved.

This Medium allows me to keep closer touch with Friends and family than without. It works for us =) Lets us talk and relate to things that are NOT even game related, have fun and enjoy the time we can

For us, living from East coast to West coast, I get to play games with my friends a few times a week.

Online Multiplayer is what you make it to be. Don't wanna deal with drama and kids.. then filter them out. Not hard to sort out the real people from fakes.

It's not just you, but it is your opinion, so it's ruining the fun of video games for you. I like online multiplayer. Most of the issues you mentioned seem to stem from having a problem dealing with the people online, but the honest to god truth is that there are people out there that wont fit in your social circle and mute works perfectly fine, at least on the 360 it does. And, cheap weapons? No, you can use the weapon too, it's not cheap unless they've got an opportunity you don't.

Local multiplayer is fine, if you've got that many friends who want to play at once, but I'd rather team up with my friends to kick the ass of all these people online. One of them having a spas attack in the lobby afterwards just gives me a bit of a smile and some closing entertainment.

And if you've got a problem with it just don't play. Only do local or private matches.

WHAT!? I can't not be the only one who likes online multiplayer! Jokes aside (though I do like online mulitplayer) you are very right this topic comes up a lot and for the most part is like how it is, with the first lines being, Is it Just Me...

I rarely ever see any five-year old potty mouths online so my online experinces have been great. :)

I love online multiplayer, really I do. However, it seems to be less fun then it used to be. I can't play anything for very long now, if none of my friends are in the game with me. There's always that one kid who thinks he's the best ever because he got to tenth prestige (yes you know the one). So smug and condescending. Putting down people like this is one of the few things that puts the fun back in the equation :)

It warms my heart to see singleplayer with the most votes in the poll. Online multiplayer is the bane of gaming---it seduces developers to create MP content at the expense of a good singleplayer component, it attracts and encourages children to act like assholes, and it is a stain on the Internet.

Fuck multiplayer. One at a time, please.

Well multiplayer has its place. I can honestly say I have had... SOME good experiences in MMO gaming, and even met my closest friend through it.

However it is an exception to the rule only because there is such an abundance of multiplayer gaming out there, that is a breeding ground for asinine behavior. Its not entirely the populations fault, part of the blame has to be laid with developers who havent came up with better ways for players to interact with each other, and choose to lean on "2 teams, now go kill each other stupid" techniques.

Me personally, ive basically given up MMOs till ToR comes out. Shooters typically only yield about a weekend - a months worth of enjoyment from the multiplayer aspect. (As much as I like L4D2... I still only got a month of play time out of it, and half of that was working on achievements.

It has its place, but I really think were long overdue for a new online multiplayer dynamic.

I love all three, Local multiplayer isn't always as good because you don't have faceless enemies to knock up the playercount (for FPSs, everything else is fine local), so, for instance, you might end up with a 3v3 Team Fortress 2 match, and that's just ridiculous.
Online multiplayer has the obvious flaw that you don't trust the players because you don't know them, they might be complete assholes, and you can't easily talk to them.
Singleplayer obviously has the flaw that you have no social interaction, which is a less mind-appreciative approach, but you don't have interruptions, or clusterfucks of people, or whatever.

First, I'm just going to say that I find it actually quite nice that to hear when online helps to bring friends/family together. :)

Now, this seriously is the big collective misery that is absolutely abhorrent. I cannot stand when a game's single player/story is sacraficed for poorly executed multiplayer. Or what about when an already mediocre game is aggrandized because its multiplayer is popular? I don't understand why every game needs multiplayer. Look, Halo and Call of Duty have everybody hooked so just let that market go and focus on the single player, i.e. Bioshock 2.

Don't get me wrong, I've had a blast before playing MP, but it was always when I knew who I was playing with rather than a bunch of random imbeciles who are competing against my patience. But now that I'm older and don't have the time usually, I'd rather sit back and relax to an engaging story than get my blood boiling over a game.

Thanks to XBL, I will never look at young children the same way again and I refuse to pay for it anymore. If I ever do want to play online, I'll buy the game for the PS3 so at least my masochistic online experience will be free.

I'm not going to vote because sadly i spend horrible amounts of time on multiplayer, however if i stopped for a second i'd probably just say "meh", whereas a game with a good story is the most addictive thing in gaming to me

I think it all boils down to the longevity, i may love the stories of some games with a passion but the fact they're story driven means there's not all that much new to do afterwards (Haven't got round to heavy rain yet and i'm not massively into RPGs). This limits me to filling the gap between playthroughs with enough rage inducing multiplayer that i'll have forgotten those little gems in the game and i can somewhat emulate the feeling of completing it for the first time

Having just finished my fourth Mass Effect 2 play-through and seeing that unbelievable ending sequence again, I have to vote single player.

Multiplayer never gives me those kind of thrills.
