Mario is how it's pronounced, it's how the name is pronounced. The name is NEVER pronounced mary-o, and if someone pronounces it that way it's incorrect, unless it's a special version of the name.

I've never ever heard the pronunciation Mary-o. Maybe your mate was just trolling you.
wouldn't be surprised.. he did insist i ask you guys..
Depends on the accent. I don't think he's trolling, but I know anyone with a Brooklyn/similar accent would say "mary-o". Actually, someone with an Italian accent might pronounce it as such too, which might be why he's insistent.

Mah-rio/Marry-Oh

Definitely not Mary-O (Mair-ree-oh) but don't really know what Mari sounds like, it could be mair-ree, mah-r-I.

You know, the movie was a fine piece of cinema...a timeless classic, if you will. I can't imagine a more true-to-form adaptation. I mean, look at how Bowser was portrayed! Phenomenal!

I'm fairly certain that they pronounced it MAH-rio. And they got REAL LIFE ITALIANS for that movie.

Its italian, its pronounced italian, case closed.
and for the pokémon case, its short for po(c)ke(t)mon(ster) that also indicates the way of pronounciation. its done correctly in the the series themesong, so why the question in the first place?

You say it like its spelt MARIO. It also requires an italien accent or it doesn't sound authentic.

Considering how many times I've heard his name across all his games, (said by himself, Luigi, Peach, and even Bowser) it's strange to me how there can be a discrepancy on the subject between 2 people from the same country. Unless the pronunciation varies from region to region, it is officially and incontrovertibly pronounced MarIo, and that is most certainly the correct pronunciation in the US. Your friend is obviously a Mario noob....or hard of hearing.

Mah-ree-oh
That is the common (if not correct) way to pronounce it.

Hell, even Mario himself pronounces his name as Mah-dee-oh.

I have heard it pronounced the Mary-o, but not nearly as much as the correct way.

Well I find the pokemon one is interchangeable as they do use it interchangebly in the series. Usually pokuhmon refers to 1 pokemon while pokémon/pokaymon refers to many pokemon ususally.
