Hello Escapists. My question is simple, say you want to play a game that you own for a console on a PC. You rarely use this console, and to set it up to play one game would be too much hassle. Is it morally justifiable in this situation to illegally download a PC copy of the game?

No, don't pirate period, I notice you included "illegally download" so I suppose that means you know what you're doing is wrong, and basically, you have answered your question.

I am not here to justify your moral dilemma's that you obviously know are wrong.

The only excuse for piracy is if the game is if you cannot purchase the game legally (as in, it's not availible where you live). There may be a couple of other circumstances where it's okay, but if you have to ask, it's probably not one of them.

I say sure. Don't do it personally as pretty much the only games I'll get on console are exclusives or things that I would prefer to have on console anyway, but I won't begrudge someone for doing it.

I haven't, but I can see that sometimes you have old games you want but are not available anymore, or you cant get it in your country etc so you download it.
But its at your own risk.

I asked whether it was immoral, not whether it was illegal.

Immoral will depend on the person. I see no problem with it, as you have already purchased the game. Personally I wouldn't likely do it, but I also don't own any games I want on another platform.

No, because owning the console version doesn't automatically grant you the licence for the PC version, which may have been developed by a different studio and even published under a different company and/or terms.

I'd say no it's not. You're not making a backup as you're in effect downloading a different game.

If a lot of people thought like that then someone might for example think 'oh well I want Dark Souls on PC but I already have it on PS3 so I'll just pirate it.' That's obviously a shitty attitude to have.

Illegal =/= morally wrong.

At least, for most moral systems.

Doesn't mean I condone illegal activity, only that I don't have any moral qualms against someone else that does it. Same with someone that pirates a region-locked game that isn't released in your region. I'm not going to call them a douchebag, though I wouldn't do it myself.
