I think it is, because in real sniping, you fire one shot and move, as opposed to firing several shots and staying where you are.
EDIT: Why does everyone assume I'm talking about Modern Warfare 2? Nevermind... stupid question...

Actually I would have thought that real snipers would stick to one place in real life conflicts. Could be wrong though. But yeah in video games you can snipe and move on quickly, I do that in Battlefield Bad Company 2.

Yeah, but it is a good idea to not make laps around the map like infantry. Ideally a sniper will make much slower laps. But ultimatley you will probably be in the same areas for extended periods of time. Just maybe not behind the same barrel or in the same window.

Of course, just move to a new spot after taking a shot.

I prefer to stick to my place until I see danger coming though.

I suppose so, but to get off accurate shots in most games, you have to stay still for at least a small amount of time. I just think people use "camping" as an excuse for why they get shot all the time

Always do what i do, fidn a good position. Take a shot 9when someone comes into the line of fire). If you cant find anyone, check to see if there will be someone crossing your sites soon (via radar etc). If noone is coming, move onto the next location, usually with your secondry weapon equipted.

Here's the difference though, a real sniper has an entire world (within the view of his/her scope) to snipe from, whereas in a game you've only got the space of the map to snipe from. It means that your potential sniping points are much more limited than an actual sniper. That doesn't mean it's not possible to avoid camping while playing a sniping class, but it does kind of make that particular argument invalid.

In the MoH beta I would snipe until I believed I could be seen or someone else was taking pot-shots at me, or the next control point had been captured and I needed to move on up.

And why the fuck shouldn't I? I don't know who it was that invented all these laws about what tactics, guns, attachments, perks, abilities, character skins and sex toys you can use, but if I ever find out I'm going to smack them upside the head.

It depends on the situation Snipers can spend days setting up a spot just to take out one high profile target. The more shots you take from one place, the easier it is to spot you.

OT: yes, but it's much easier to camp in most games.

Ever see the crazy jumping guy running around in the middle of the field sniping people left right and center? Yeah. That's me.

In terms of K/D ratio in most online shooters (where else would be be speaking about this), I've noticed the successful snipers are duckers and weavers. They'll make a few shots from a an 'atypical' location, and then get out of dodge before the angry respawners come to investigate the origin of their prior demise like vindictive ghosts that shoot bullets.

Of course, Halo and Modern Warfare introduce the infurating feasibility of 'assault sniping' or 'quickscoping' as another user put, more aptly.

IRL, as I understand it [sub](but might totally be talking out my ass here)[/sub], I was told that a rule of thumb regarding western (US) and eastern (Russian) sniper doctrine was a willingness to engage targets > or < approximately 800m respectively [SIMPLIFICATION]. I'd imagine that's much less relevant nowadays, but you can sorta see it in the favored design philosophy between past American and ex-Soviet Bloc arms technology.

I say that problems with camping are more problems with map and game design. If you had an older game with a small room on a map where an awesome weapon and health would spawn it was usually real easy to just sit in there and shoot people who tried to come in.

The only thing I will derogatorily call camping in games now is when someone stays in a spot that it really isn't even beneficial to stay in just to they can camp. Like when a recon sits all the way in the back of your spawn in BC2 and manages to kill a grand total of three people over the course of 10 minutes while the rest of your team is trying to blow up an MCOM.

Camping sounds so boring, it'd be much more efficient if you moved between sniping points rather than glueing yourself to one spot. That's just making yourself a target.

Ofcource you can camp without sniping, but if you are in a good team and the map has bad design, you don't have to.

Take Halo Reach's Hemorage for instance. The red team starts of with a rocky hill behind them. Good place to secure starting position at. Then one dude takes the rocks on the left and enters a small camping hole with a visual on the right side of the map. 2 guys take the right side to cover the left. One dude stays back to spam bullets at dudes trying to attack to others. This never fails in snipers. The other team can't do this as easily, since their spawn area doesn't have good sniping spots.

Unlike most people, I kinda like quickscopers. Takes away the random feel of sniperdeaths when you meet your enemy face to face.

I only camp when I am the attackers in rush mode in BFBC2. Only then do I go after opposing snipers and people who try to defuse the bombs on the Mcom stations.
