As a long-time gamer I always want to get 100% from the games I play. In games like Fable 2, Mass Effect, and Fallout 3, this sometimes means playing as a character of the opposite sex. Some of my friends think it's creepy to play as a female, when when you're gender is optional in a game (provivded you aren't a female in real life). On my first playthrough on any game I'll make a male character after myself. But when that is done, I like to go back through my favorite games in a different perspective, and I see it as perfectly logical, and it has always changed the course of the game for me. It usually pretty interesting. It's getting the maximum entertainment value from a game. (I'm only talking about offline games though)

So I ask my fellow escapist, is it strange to play as a character of the opposite sex in a game?

(and before you ask, no, I didn't search for a similar thread...and the searchbar ISN'T my friend)

I don't really see the point in going out of your way to make yourself female, since it rarely changes anything, but I wouldn't laugh at someone who did. If I'm forced to play as a female, I wouldn't complain, though.

Ehhhh it's not creepy, but it just feels weird if I'm given a choice and play as a female but if it's the developers choice I could care less who I play as.

I did it a couple of times. Mainly because it turned out that its non-cannon to play as a dude in KOTOR 2. I would not usually do it though. I did it once in Oblivion, and they gave me hell until I got annoyed and saved over the files on purpose. They still give me hell about it and say I still play as a girl. Which is dumb since I never played as a girl after that or even before that (in any game other than KOTOR2).

Not really, it's a game. If it was Metroid series wouldn't have been one of nintendos 3 wonder-children.

When i played WoW i picked the gender based on what looked best.
My orcs and taurens we're all male, but my undead rogue was female, cause i think the male undead looked stupid. Same with trolls.

I actguallyt met a dude in EVE online who claimed that me and two of my friends we're gay cause we had male avatars. He said that if we had male avatars (which you rarely even see btw) we prefered to look at men, and was therfor gay.
Since we had just shot him down, we had his corpse, and suggested him to change his chars name from slave-chick to fat chick, cause the corpse info said it was 200kg :p

I played as a female character in a few games, Fallout 3 and Oblivion mainly, I see nothing wrong with it, but don't see it as vital to completing a game.

I've said it before, and I will say it again.

If I'm gonna follow my avatar around for a whole game, I better be looking at something nice.

As a lady right here--you have to play as a guy a lot. It's not that weird.

So if I ever get a choice on a gender--well, it's a toss-up and truly does just come down to stats in the end.

This. I always play both genders in RPG games where I'm given a choice though. I want to get the full experience.

I don't really think that its not right like the poll option says but I pretty much never play female characters. It just tend to turn me away from the character/class. I just always tend to think that the player is the same sex and the character and I guess I don't want people to call me she/her.

I tend to play more as female charaters, especially in rpgs and such. im not quite sure why, but i tend to enjoy the game more when playing as a female.
Maybe it has something to do with completely blocking out real life when immersing myself in a game world.

Given the option, I usually play a male character. The only two exceptions so far were making female characters on MMO's so I can get free shit, and the other was Fallout 3.

One of my three or four characters on Fallout 3 are a female simply because I enjoy the dialogue much more that with a male character.

What this guy said. It really doesn't matter what sex my character is, but given the option I'll always choose male. Why? I have no idea, I just do it, since it changes the gameplay negligibly, if at all.

I think it's because most games that have make a charecter are Role-Playing games, and usually in a Role-Playing game people like to make a charecter that reflects themself, just with a large sword and magic!

I play as both sexes to get the most out of the game, although I did play as a female in Mass Effect to see if I could have hot lesbian alien sex...turns out you can.
