You should film it but have none of the actors where clothes and in between just put in some sex scenes...that would be porn. But propaganda is worse cause nobody likes it.

Oh, you're never going to successful as a filmmaker are you? Ten years from when this opportunity is long gone, you have no professional work in your portfolio, and there is no one hiring (you), then you'll be wishing you had made a church video. Make porn. Make religious films. Make how-to videos. Make commercials. Why make up arbitrary barriers for yourself when there are already thousand of real barriers in place?

It pretty much is the same. You're sacrificing personal integrity for money.

Don't do something you'll regret later.

If you can separate yourself completely from your work(possibly use a pseudonym) and do it guilt free than go for it. I'm not judging you either way.

Interesting conundrum..... I guess it really depends on the church and the people who run it. Is it a Catholic church?

My own experience of American Catholicism (I'm Irish) is that it seems quite a bit stricter on people than the Irish Church. I'm Catholic as well, or at least I'd identify myself as such.... but that's not to say I'm willing to let old sheltered men talk down to me and tell me how to live my life like that American priest I encountered.

Anyway, my issues with the very existence of the hierarchy aside.... If they're genuinely motivated by a desire to reach out to people, to help people struggling for answers or people just needing help by a larger community then I don't think you should be worried about shoving anything down anyone's throat.
if it's a pure recruitment tool, walk away, if the message they convey is as un-Christian as some of the twoddle the Vatican has come up with in the past, walk away..

But if at the end of the day it's to inform people about that Church, spread the good word and invite people to join a community or even re-connect with that and their faith, well, more power to them and to you.

Ultimately, though, you need to eat, right?

No. Just as bad, but for different reasons. But hey, you need money. Make a subtle disclaimer after the credits saying "The views expressed in this film are not the same as the director" :p

Well, when it's "Aggressively Reaching towards People who are away from God", then it might as well be the same as Filming Porn. (P.S., I am Catholic, though people here call me a "Christian Deist"). If you don't wanna do it, don't bother. But if you could convince them to not "Aggressively Reach Towards People Who Are Far Away From God", maybe make it more about the good points and not the bad, then try that. If you desperately need money, either: Film their Aggressive Religious Film, Film some Porn, or Get a second Job.

If I understand you correctly, what you're asking can basically be boiled down to a matter of principles and how far you should compromise your personal principles in order to make a living. In truth that's a question only you can answer, you've decided you never want to work on anything pornographic in nature and I applaud you for that, but is what this church is asking you to do... well does it feel wrong to you? Does it make you feel much the same way the thought of making porn does? If the answer to either or both those questions is 'yes', then you should probably turn down the job.

If you are seriously against both, try find something else. Otherwise decide which one is less against what you believe, 'cause you need to eat and other opportunities may not arise too soon.

I can't believe I am saying this...

But when we seem to be arguing that making an evangelizing film for your church is worse than making porn, I am losing faith in humanity. I really am.

Though I do have to say this: if you are actually having issues deciding between this and porn, which is AGAINST the Church's teachings, maybe you should consider switching your church. If it bothers you so much to make a video supporting a church that you claim to support so much, perhaps you don't support them as much as you think you do, especially if you're comparing their work to porn.

My advice? If you haven't already, start by requesting a copy of a manuscript of what they want you to film. Read it over and decide from there if you are comfortable filming it. If you are, do it. If not, turn them down. It's that simple. Just make that part of your policy when deciding what filming you're going to do. You're the artist, you have the control over what work you will and will not do.
clarification, i found this job post on craigslists amongst of ALL places. So this is not a church i regularly attend or even knew existed. So i go into the situation knowing that while things could be cool, but they could also go to hell... so to speak. IE, when i was a extra for a "christian" short telling the stories of those who were "muslim" (I swear to God she choked on the word) and became christians. I came because I figured i would get good stories and dear GOD was i right.

It's worse, if you wind up supporting viewpoints you consider objectionable. You obviously don't object to porn, you just don't think the work would be very interesting. It's like passing up a job in middle management because it's boring and instead deciding to be the head chef for baby eaters.

If people tell me that they are southern baptist or any other jesus following church that goes under any name other than Catholic, or if they are wiccan, atheist, jewish, etc, they again do not get the "going to hell" speech from me.
I don't think I've ever heard a "going to hell" speech. I've heard more passive "you might be happier" speeches, but never Hell.

Anywho, I'm a very left leaning Christian, so I know what you mean about not wanting to be condescending, yet wanting to get the word out in a more passive, respectful manner.

Go to the first day. Don't judge them as being condescending, try to give them the benefit of the doubt. If it is the wrong kind of evangalizing, just walk out. Say you're not comfortable with it.

No offense meant to you, or anyone else, but I find Catholicism far more offensive than a man and woman engaging in sexual acts.

I am not starting a religious conversation, nor do I wish to speak poorly of anyone who is Catholic.

I voted yes

The reason I voted yes is that Pornography and Catholic propaganda have one thing in common: There are people who do not want to see it. AT ALL.

The general vibe I get from your original post is that you do not want to produce films which may be poorly received by a large number of people, hence my opinion.

Film the porn. People forcing their religion on others is the main problem with the world today. If everyone could keep their opinions/morals to themselves, society would be a MUCH happier place.

Seems like the same thing as porn to me, but don't let that stop you. Money always comes before principles, when eating and having a home are at jeopardy.

It's not like your name is gonna be plastered all over the thing is it?
