I was just watching some of the older Zero Punctuation videos, and one of them questioned whether Mario should send in his letter of resignation and retire to Florida. So I started wondering if maybe it is time for him to buy a condo, since he has been going for 27 years (which is longer than a lot of people in the dark ages).

Anyhow I wanted to hear some other opinions on this.

The other day there was a post in the forums about making games centered on villains from games, the idea of Bowser in an RTS was brought up, and I thought it seemed like a good idea. While yes, you could still make games with Mario, more often than not anyway, we are forced to endure crap such as : Mario Super Sluggers, Strikers, Party, etc.

I would say drop Mario, yes I realize he's the spokesman for an entire generation and company, but seriously, I'd much rather play a game that's such a massive achievement, that doesn't have Mario at the forefront.

I mean, part of me wants to say yes, but the other side of me says, he needs to raise another generation and show them the art of the videogame... He needs to be here to greet them and show them how the world of games works...
I'm biased however, due to the fact that (no joke) my uncle used to bribe me with videogames to get me to do homework when I was in elementary school... So Mario raised me, and now I've strayed from him, and don't like some of the things nintendo has done to him... But I'm sure there's still a reason he's here.

It's still one of the greatest series in gaming, so why the hell should it be put to rest?

Just to get debate thriving; Don't you think that if something is still making a lot of money, that means that there is still a large audience for it.

i think mario should be stuck to platformers. NO SPORTS! NO PARTIES! and if he does it again there shall be fiery vengeance. maybe just not buying it... now that i think about it that doesnt seem very fiery does it? no... no fire at all... not really even very good revenge either...

i'll be the first to admit that i never really liked any mario games, with no direct attack i always found myself dying 20x more than anyone else, maybe fps's have ruined me, but i think they should either make a good mario who can defend himself properly or give up on the whole thing, the latter being the easier and better choice

I'm not sure Mario should be retired entirely, but it does seem that he is a little overexposed. I enjoyed golf, tennis, karts, and party, but they really don't need to be updated regularly. Furthermore, when you consider soccer, baseball, and the olympics, it's starting to feel a little like overkill. So, I propose a third choice on the poll: Mario's fine, but let's just stick to core games.

Well, as long as his main title's continue to be top-notch, why would they put him to rest? If a game is good, why stop? And that's purely from an economic perspective. Good games=good money, and main title Mario games are almost always good.

Why? He's obviously still popular and making Nintendo lots of money. It helps that a lot of his platformers are birlliant games. Maybe they could do with toning down all the spin-offs, but getting rid of Mario completely? No chance.
Besides, it's not like Nintendo have stopped creating new IPs completely. We had Pikmin on the Gamecube that was new and I'm sure they'll come up with something new this generation...maybe.

For the love of god, yes. When Nintendo finally puts not only Mario, but the rest of it's old and over-used intellectual properties (Metroid, Zelda, Donkey Kong, the list goes on), the company can finally move on and, hopefully, start making games with fresh ideas. That's assuming that they still know how...

Nintendo needs to just stop re-making the same games over and over and over and over and over and over and over....ugh, got stuck there, like Nintendo! Really now, Zelda, again? Mario again? I have been playing those since 1987 on up and it is like beating a dead hose with a spiked bat.

I think they can keep making the core platformer games with Mario (do they still even make those?), but drop the bloody spinoffs. Just put some other arbitrary, preferably NEW character there. After all, games like Mario kart have nothing to do with the original mario concept...

i'm not sorry when i say this:
mario should have Coded in his sleep and died after super mario 64.
EDIT to avoid confusion .
not because it was bad, but because that was as great as it ever got.

Yeah, enough with the remakes! It seems like the Mario franchise suffocates all other games on Nintendos systems, which makes for a rather narrow selection of good games. I'm not saying that there aren't any other good games, just that they have a harder time to get noticed with all these first-party re-titles.

I think he's like all other old video game mascots. If they make a new game with different mechanics, people will complain that it betrays the spirit of the original. If they don't make any changes, people complain it's just more of the same. He's only good as a mascot now, nothing more.
