I would say yes, but I think most people are just angry at mascots and want them replaced with more Marcus Phoenixes and Master Chiefs... yeah no.

I say, let Mario continue to be the marker when it comes to platforming games. Though I do agree that some of the spinoffs need to go.

But if we're talking about getting rid of Mario, let's think about what we'd be missing:

No more seminal platformers.
No more Mario Kart.
No more Smash Bros.
No more Mario Rpgs.

Whilst I agree that Nintendo are continuing to remake the same game over and over, I feel absolutely no need to complain when the games in question have been as good as Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 and LoZ:Twilight Princess.

Are these games original? No. Does that mean they should be retired? Hell no. I'm not a big Nintendo fan and don't own a Wii, but these are some of the best games of the past few years. Let other companies create new and interesting games (which they're doing) and just leave Nintendo be. They've got so much money it's not like they're going to listen to any of our pleas anyway. Nintendo does what Nintendo does.

As long as they are fun and retain the same great mario feel, why get rid of him. I do think nintendo should be making some new IP's, but why get rid of well established quality IP's? If a franchise can still keep it's charm and appeal, I find no reason to stop it if it can still produce good games that live up to the standards it's predecessors have established.

Really...if it aint broke, don't fix it, just try to make it better. i will continue to enjoy mario, metroid, zelda, final fantasy, ect...if they keep making fun games. Age of a franchise means nothing to me, it's all about quality.

The original was great.

Super Mario was great.

Mario 64 was great.

Some of his other iterations have been fun.

All he can do now is pick up a skateboard or something else which doesn't suit his demeanor. I say let him go before Mario raps or starts killing people.

Fuck, no. Mario is amazing and anyone who says otherwise is insane. That doesn't mean I love all the spin-offs (which are generally pretty good games), but the main franchise games need to stay around for all time.

personally I thought galaxy was relitively original in some of it's gameplay mechanics, but still familiar enough to feel like a Mario game and those that love Mario 64 can feel the resemblance. All in all, I think that means they did a good job making the game, and it doesnt deserve to die for it. On the other hand, it's hard to imagine a good next game for the series, so perhaps this is the proper time. If they can think of a way to improve on the concept, they should definetely make another, if it is Mario Galaxy 2, then it's time. So far no sequels, so far so good.

I think he's like all other old video game mascots. If they make a new game with different mechanics, people will complain that it betrays the spirit of the original. If they don't make any changes, people complain it's just more of the same. He's only good as a mascot now, nothing more.
then he should go the way of Polygon Man. purple and dead.
I'm not seeing he needs to die necessarily, but his games are not going to be the successes that they once were. He may become nothing but a mascot, with no new games being made. Look at what has happened to Sonic: every Sonic game in recent memory has been utter crap. The mascot of Sega has become the star of horrible video games and nothing else.

I don't really understand why Mario should be put to sleep. He seems to still be successful.

I liked Mario Galaxy, more games like that would be good.

No way. That'll just enrage the already feeble-minded Nintendo "fanboys" who are pissed off at Nintendo's E3 Conference and allegedly sold their Wii's when they "were once a TRUE fan" as an angry sign of protest.

yes, mario SHOULD have been put to sleep ages ago but nooo, he just stayed around, got drunk and made everybody laugh at his attempts to be fun.
