it's not too late
the controls are adequate even for today's standards
the graphics... are alright but there is a cinematic texture and model overhaul if you want it and posses Half Life 2 and episode 1 and 2

EDIT: I'm waiting for the blackmesa mod for half life 2 it's half life 1 on the source engine

but not like half life source http://blackmesasource.com/ it's way too pretty for that

Nope, the half life train hasn't moved in near 10 years or so, you've not missed a lot.

Well for Metroid prime that was more like 7 or 8 so not YOUNG child persay, but young in regards to my gaming career.
A whole cross section of Escapist users are getting waves of depression from this comment! I still think of Prime as the 'new' Metroid games, darn it!

RE: Half Life, get the Source re-release off of Steam, it runs better than the original. As for how much fun you'll have, not a clue, if you only got as far as the sewers then you didn't get to all the cool bits.

It's not too late, you can jump on a train to Nova Prospeckt in no time. Just speak to your nearest civil security officer and follow their instructions.

With conundrums like this, I find it best to look at worst-case and best-case scenarios. By trying, you risk fairly little, and stand to gain a lot. If you don't try, you'll probably keep wondering about what you might have missed for a long time, and you'll potentially have missed a great gaming experience. So yeah, I say go for it.

Start with Half Life 2, because of the way point of view is done in the original, it's likely to give you a massive headache. It's definitely not too late to start playing them.

I've played Half-Life 1 quite recently, only a few months ago, and was impressed at how incredibly well it stands up against modern games.

It's still one of the best FPSs out there.

OT: I don't even understand the question. Since when do games have an expiration date? I've been with the HL series since their release and they've always been great. They are still great. Of course, your mileage may vary but still, I doubt that should be affected by time.
Yeah I'm sort of perplexed by it too. If a game is good, then it it's just good, and it will never change. I played Deus Ex for the first time last year and have no problem enjoying the hell out of it for what it is.

Honestly if you're even questioning your ability to get into a standout established classic from a genre you've always loved, having played similar games of the same era even... then I'd probably say it's not worth it; because the game's merits will be wasted on you.

I first played all of the Half Life games last year. They are now among my favorite games. And since I doubt a year will make much of a difference, no it's not too late.

Having just recently replayed all of HL1 and 2, I've gotta say...

It definately has some noteworthy problems with it, but overall it's still worth playing.

HL1: glitches. they're in there. trolley's hitting invisible walls, levers not raising water levels properly, etc. Not nearly as well refined as everyone says, but that's what console cheats are for I suppose.

HL2: vehicles. Especially in episode 1. The vehicle sections tend to drag on and on and on... it got old.

Alot of that is just nitpicking though. It's still worth a play.
There were vehicle sections in episode one? Where did you buy your version?

Oh and yeah Games hold up pretty well and are definitely worth playing

We talking about the same Metroid Prime? The Gamecube 2003 one?

The graphics haven't aged well, but everything else has. My suggestion: if you're already curious, I'd definitely recommend trying it, it's hardly gonna bite ya if ya don't like it...

Apreciate whats there but you will suffer from withdrawl after episode 2 and with no episode 3 in sight I dont know if you want to go through that.
I would definatly go for it though its an excellent series one of my favourites.

Yup, but go back fifteen years and I was playing Metroid in 2D, you can still buy new consoles that will play Prime, ergo it's still the new one!*

*Other M? We don't talk about Other M

Alright fine, got Half life 2 and half life 2 ep 1 mixed up. Was going to try and do it without spoilers, but fuck it. Every vehicle section dragged on and on throughout the entirity of half life 2. the boats, the buggy, etc.

Half-life 1 and 2 are both pretty much mandatory lessons in FPS history. They played major roles in the evolution of how FPS games deliver narrative to the player. However, many aspects of both games may seem standard and generic today, though they were revolutionary when they were released.

I would hardly call vehicles spoilers as they have little to no impact on plot. But it is thought that counts i guess
