I played most of it about a year ago. I found the story engaging but non-spectacular. The gameplay was lacking but tolerable. Technically the game is a mess and I had to give up due to bugs. Graphically the age obviously shows, but not in a way that put me off.

I think I would have thought pretty much the same if I played it at release, maybe apart for my opinion on the graphics. A solid but non-spectacular RPG made at a time when no one but BioWare made PC games like that.

I find Kotor 1 to be a good game but not as great as it's often made out to be. The gameplay is okay but the combat lacks any real depth, and the story is decent but there really isn't anything spectacular about it. The big twist is fairly good but that's the only part of the story that I really remember, and that's as much for the surprise as anything else. The characters are fine I suppose, but they're all really just archetypes lacking a third dimension.

I liked Kotor 2 a lot more because of the story and characters, which are a lot better thought out and the characters have a lot more depth.

The graphics are certainly showing their age, but the story and game play is still leaps and bounds above some triple a titles rpgs of today.

Lots of thought was put into that game, you can tell.

IMO the only thing about the game that's showing its age is the graphical fidelity and even that can be moded. As for the story and characters I think theyre still compelling characters. Some of them less interesting then others but all of them are memorable in their own way. The twist is also still compelling IMO because of how the character touches other peoples lives whether they be your companions or the individuals you meet on the various worlds out there.

Ok I've just finished a long session and this is the verdict :

Kotor has much better dialogued and options. The Mass Effect paragon-renegade choices are pretty rubbish. The renegade options for example are few in between, and often quite bland while in KOTOR its more

-please don't kill me!
-you better give me a reason not to
-here take 100 creds that all I have....I'll be on my way now
-I'm sorry I only fight to the death
-noooooo

It's obvious Mass Effects takes itself more seriously and now that I can make a fresh comparison I'd say KYOTO is better in everyway. Yes Mass Effect was incredible, and the story was incredible. After completing Mass Effect the first thing I did was to start a new game....but the plot in KYOTO is so much more brilliant and the combat is better even though there are no chest high walls.

KYOTO? either you are speaking selkath or you meant KOTOR

(I promise you, kyoto is one of the pronunciations of a selkath word in KOTOR)

I tried playing it once... Oh lord I could not stand the beginning, just... Trapped in that city trying to find some way to progress the story and become a Jedi. Didn't really scream "Epic Space Adventure" to me.
The first planet is boring, once you leave the game opens up and becomes a very epic space adventure.

You can't get a real feel of the story in that amount of time. And much like KOTOR2, I feel the opening of KOTOR on Taris is a bit too slow and boring compared to the rest of the game. When you're done there and move on is when it really picks up.

So that's pretty much it. Taris sucks. You have to finish that part to really enjoy the game. If you don't get there, you're missing out.

Kotor 1 was excellent and way above average. Not perfect mind you- it had it's misses along with its hits. Most notably, gameplay, graphics, some of the characters and the "visit X number of identical planets"- part overstayed its welcome somewhat. Regardless, I would rate it as one of the top 10 RPG's of all time.

However, it is nothing compared to Kotor 2- which I would rate as #3 or #4 RPG of all time. Seriously, the only bad thing I can say about that game is the shitty ending- the graphics and gameplay still stand up compared to today's games and the story and characters are way, way above anything you'll find today.

Which is quite surprising considering how much more games cost today *baffled*.

The graphics arent *that* bad if you use flawless widescreen. I'm playing KOTOR and I've gotten used to the graphics.
