Audio is important in both games and movies. The music in it self?... Yeah, it's important, but you can have a good emersive game without it.

You couldn't sell a game with no soundtrack, so yes, it's important. That said, I always turn it off in every game I own. If you want me to be happy, or sad, or react in some other way to what's happening in your story, try making characters I care about, rather than cuing up the sad, sad music.

I would say yes, so long as the music is appropriate, and knows when to butt out as well as when to make its presence known.

Heck, there are soundtracks I enjoy far more than the game they're for!

Yeah the music deffinatly sets the mood for the game, it can completly change the atmosphere of a game for example left 4 dead with the Benny Hill theme tune.
I SO want to play that now.

Absolutely YES!

Especially in Mass Effect 2 when you are recruiting the assassin, and you have to fight your way across the bridge. The music in that part is god-like, it creates such an amazing athmosphere, and it truly felt epic.

Other example is in COD: World at war, during the last mission in soviet campaing.
That mission already was superiously badass and epic, and then this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmvgkJYmXC4] kicks in.

I already know the answer myself and that is yes but i wanted to hear other peoples opinion. It is important because it sets the atmosphere
I agree completely except sometimes lack of music sets atmosphere too i.e. bioshock
i agree, no music makes you feel less immersed in the game
Hold on less immersed?? you are contradicting what imnotparanoid said. yes no music does help the atmosphere when your in a darked room and then a sudden blast of music from nowhere as a zombie come to bit your nipples off!

A game could have great controls and a good story, but without music the game would feel kinda empty to me.

Where's the 'It depends on the genre' option? Sorry, let me elaborate: some games (I'll use Halo:CE and Morrowind as examples) really use music to build atmosphere exceptionally well and just wouldn't be the same without their original scores. Other games (I'll use Gran Turismo 4 and Wipeout: Fusion this time) have music just as a background medium, something that is relatively unimportant to the overall experience, and these types of games can easily have their scores substituted by whatever you've got ripped to your harddrive.

I'd say it's more important for the music to be done well than for the music to be there, if a game has really crap out of place music then it would be far better off if they took the music out altogether.

Yes, music is important. It feels awesome to kill a huge boss or have an epic gun fight with some good tunes.

Yes, but not as important as the other key audio: Voice acting.

It'll make or break your game. DA:O is only just okay, according to my standards. The level I expect as a standard is Baldur's Gate 2 or Halo 2/3 (Arbiter, Admiral Hood.. actors as voice actors, top talent). A little less (Mass Effect) is okay, but then you get shit like Neverwinter Nights 2 (Neeshka, everyone else), or half the cast of Final Fantasy 13 (especially Vanille)... Unplayable much?
