Personally, I don't know but I'm leaning toward 'yes.'

Be aware though that I'm asking if paying for ONLINE MULTIPLAYER is justifiable and not a Gold membership.

No. It is not acceptable to charge for something for used to be free. Or, i don't think so.

EDIT: If it's price included in the game, then sure, but if it's like gold, then no.

No, because nothing Microsoft does for Xbox Live requires payment. Without any dedicated servers for games, what gamers are paying for is... wait, what exactly are they paying for? Microsoft could have easily created other sources of revenue. Live Gold shouldn't exist; not the least while PSN & Steam are completely free, and just as competent.

The reason online MP is free for the PC is that you're hosting your own server or playing off of someone elses.

As to whether PSN is just as competent as Xbox Live remains to be seen.

I assume you meant to quote this post... Because otherwise it makes no sense.

Yes,if I don't want to then I will not.Honestly, whenever $ springs up into the conversation people pretend we're all mindless drones without the faintest idea what it is we see before us.

In my situation, yes. The Playstation 3 has little to no games I want to play, online or not, and those I do want to play are also on the Xbox 360.
The PSN being free allows me to play online with the few exclusives I may want to get without the hassle of paying a subscription to play the one game online.
On the Xbox 360, I play online a fair bit and, since all my friends have 360s, most of the games I get I will play online with them.
$70 AUS a year is a pretty fair trade off, I think.

Voted "maybe" as this post is all about my personal situation, which I think would be pretty rare for other people.

If you are willing to pay for it then i guess it means that in your eyes it is fair.
And that is about it really. But that goes for XBL.
Something like COD Elite on the other hand i have to say is not worth it.

Yes, it's fair. Caveat emptor.

Is it justifiable? That's completely up to the individual. Personally, I can justify nearly anything if I work hard enough to convince myself.

I think the service you get is absolutely worth it if you're predominantly a multiplayer kind of person like me.

Although I feel it's worth it, Microsoft really doesn't NEED us to be paying the fee. They already have all the moneys and a little server upkeep can't be THAT bad of a cost for XBL. Especially with all the advertising.

I'm undecided on wether or not it's fair but I don't think the idea of it being fair is relevant the reason Microsoft charges money for Xbox Live is because they can. Think about it if six months down the track Sony decided to charge money for the PSN do you think they would lose a large percentage of their numbers? I tihnk not. The reason people are charged for Live is because they are willing to pay for it the concept of it being fair isn't bought into play.

Nope. I bought your console I buy your games. Even your exclusives. Yet I must pay for more.

I see no reason why they shouldn't be able to charge people money for a service.

That said, it's not a service I would be willing to pay for. I mean, you buy the console, buy the game(s), pay for an internet connection... and then pay for XBL on top of that? No thanks.

It really depends on the multiplayer game. An MMO, where you need added content to have players keep playing (I.E. more quests, items, enemies)? Yes. A multiplayer game like COD, Starcraft, where the content is almost entirely based on the players themselves (I.E. skill)? No.

I do believe that Microsoft charging for a Gold subscription is fair and well within their rights. Microsoft provides a service to Xbox users, not just in online play, but for the entire infrastructure of friends lists, marketplace, live chatting, all that jazz. Certainly there are free alternatives, but as Microsoft is the one providing the service, they are entitled to set their own price. It's up to the consumer to decide on an individual basis whether Microsoft's service is worth the money, compared to competitors' services.

With that said, with Xbox Live being a paid service, I believe it should be held to a higher standard of quality than a comparable free alternative. And on a personal level I don't feel that I'm getting a good value compared to something like Steam or PSN (recent downtime notwithstanding).
