Finally. Please say you recognize these names or at least some of them:ThatsBitch3n said:Anyone still listen to the REAL punk?
You should check out some more recent stuff, or some more obscure 80s stuff. I can give you a list of good bands if you want some more to listen to:ThatsBitch3n said:I am way into Punk Rock, but no one seems to be listening to actual punk anymore. When I mention Punk, people drop names like Green Day, but when i say Richard Hell, the Heart Breakers, the Dead Kennedys, the Dictators, the New York Dolls, Iggy and the Stooges and the like i get blank stares. Anyone still listen to the REAL punk?
These are all pretty mainstream actually. And a lot of them are closer to being hardcore than punk, but whatever.piers789 said:Finally. Please say you recognize these names or at least some of them:ThatsBitch3n said:Anyone still listen to the REAL punk?
The Unseen; Redlightsflash, Good Riddance, Strung Out, (you've already said the Dead Kens), A Wilhelm Scream, Intro5prect, Five Knuckle, Zero Down, Strike Anywhere, Social Distortion, Sick Of It All, Raised Fist, No Trigger, No Cash,... I could go on but you get the idea.
Even Jello Biafra?Cheesebob said:Yes I do...mainly the Clash, Sex Pistols and The Jam.
If anyone, and I do mean anyone, says that Green Day are punk.
Well I will have to come over and kick you in the balls; They arn't punk, they are Nu-punk (in other words Punk lite) and thus, are shit
To me the King Blues are more ska than punk. Still good though.messy said:well to me punk rock has to challenge the establishment in someone, sort of a social commentarty The King Blues, are the proabaly the best modern punk i can think of. Other then that it is somewhat lacking in todays age of manufactured pop.
Gah! I was kind of baiting for someone to go, "No! They're mainstream! Not punk"Fightgarr said:They are not. They are dance rock.ButtonedDownParadox said:Yeah Yeah Yeahs considered punk rock?
They're pretty popular.
At this point they nod and smile at me because apparently I'm part of their elitist club now. That is not what punk rock is about you fucking douchebags.
I just happen to know way too much about punk having previously been an elitist, punk asshole. But having something be labeled as something else other than punk isn't bad, its good. I'd much rather listen to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs than a lot of the stuff I used to listen to.ButtonedDownParadox said:Gah! I was kind of baiting for someone to go, "No! They're mainstream! And then you go and follow it up with how silly elitist people can get with their labels and how especially pointless this is when discussing punk rock. But now I'm just left useless.

I don't mean mainstream in the sense of everyone listens to them, but if you were to say: "I listen to The Unseen" or "I listen to Strike Anywhere" there are a lot of people who would know who you're talking about, or rather moreso than if you said you listen to say... UK Subs. I'm just saying that with the "please recognize these names" part you listed some fairly well-known underground bands. Which doesn't really say anything negative about them at all. Most of those bands I find quite good to listen to and Strike Anywhere toured with one of my favorite bands of all time (A Global Threat).piers789 said:I'll willingly concede that some are pretty close to hardcore, if not actually being hardcore. But I wouldn't say mainstream though, with the possible exceptions of Social Distortion.
Fair comment; and you're definitely right about there being much more obscure bands out there, but I still get blank looks from a lot of people when I mention these sorts of bands. Maybe its just because there isn't a massive punk/punk rock scene where I live...Fightgarr said:I don't mean mainstream in the sense of everyone listens to them, but if you were to say: "I listen to The Unseen" or "I listen to Strike Anywhere" there are a lot of people who would know who you're talking about, or rather moreso than if you said you listen to say...
