I would like to think it is because I play a game to (I guess the best choice of words would be) escape the real world. But things like the WiiFit I mean come on. It's essentially a work out but as a video game. It bothers me that people would rather get a WiiFit than a freakin' bowflex. Before you know it gym's will be a thing of the past. Video games will start making their own line of exercise games. It amazes me that people seem to think exercise is easier if it's a video game.

I think realism should be kept where it belongs. Games which aren't realistic in nature shouldn't have to be bothered with realistic trivialities. Why is it I have to reload guns in every game I play now? The Bottomless Clip(tm) was a staple of action-oriented FPS games for a looong time, until all these realistic sods started wandering onto the scene. If its feasible that I can do a double-backflip while unloading a rocket launcher on full auto it is damn-well feasible that I can reload the thing with my mind.

Only other problem I have with "realism" is more in a thematic sense: I think the general level of creativity in game development has taken a backseat to the use of more mundane settings. And sure, there HAVE been interesting and creative things done within "realistic" settings but... well... reminisce back a couple years and try to count the number of WW2-based games there were on the shelf at any one time? You can take off your shoes, you'll need to.

great point, i think the realism thing has taken creativity and thrown it out the door... If you base the rules of the game, on the rules of real world then you lose a bit of that creative edge, and potential. Realism has limits, and that is why it is bad for gameplay development. Good games have meta games that you have to learn, and hopefully over time, evolve. A meta game will evolve if the game has depth. Starcraft has a metagame that is changing even today, showing that it has a HUGE skill ceiling and huge depth, a game that even after 10 years has not been pushed to it's limit is amazing. Other games like CS have different styles of metagames, until recently, the best CS teams were literally won on raw aim alone, but the last year has seen the birth of new strategies, such as pushing de_dust2 while on defense. It's gone from a slow game to a game where its been much more aggressive, leaning for other teams to figure out how to counter these new strategies. Now games without alot of depth don't change much, these would be like COD4, strategies haven't changed at all since the game came out. I actually scrimmed with my team a couple days ago and everyone was playing the same spots as my old team did...... when the game came out. Even with the AWP sniper patch, even with the no sway patch, even with the removal of deep impact, the way the game works is still near the same, the way people play has hardly changed at all, other the running a sniper in tighter maps.

..... but I'm the kinda guy who likes a game that evolves, that you can't figure out quickly, with rules you have to discover, and techniques you have to master. Its great enjoyment for me to get better at games. I always like a challenge, : ).

Go to http://nquake.com/ to download it man. It was released under the GPL license, when Carmack released the Source code to the engine. Its like 2 MB, and that has the installer, it has updated graphics, even has bloom in it... not the prettiest game i will admit, but i play it with no textures, lol. : )

EDIT: when it asks for pak1.pak, just hit next
Wait, what!? That is awesome! Why have I not been informed of this before!?

Brothers In Arms... /thread

Anyways, like many other people have said, it really depends on the game. Both are nice, and both have their skills that are required to win. They just offer something different from the other, so there's no real point blaming realistic games.

I was actually enamored with Yahtzee because he sounded like the voices in my head (don't ask why they speak with a British accent).

Agreed. I enjoy tactical shooters (and sims in general) a lot, and I enjoy good ole fashioned deathmatchey games from time to time, but god damnit keep the peanut butter out of the fucking chocolate. They don't always go good together.

Your average FPS these days tends to try WAY too hard at being gritty and realistic and they usually fail really hard. Chalk it up to the gaming industry's very short-sighted vision and complete lack of creative spirit. When something like Call of Duty 4 hits the scene and rakes in the cash all it does is further the industry's desire to make clones and judge everything else as "not-profitable."

Just like all things this is a phase, and eventually the next big thing will hit and everyone will make clones of that. With luck, the next big phase will be a giant 180 to making lotsa big stompy robot games so we can FINALLY get Mechwarrior 5 :D.

Generally no. All the first person shooters nowadays are Quake and Halo clones anyway, so the topic should really be Do we need more variety in gaming?
