Now, let me say that I really like this game a lot.

My problem is that it has received a large number of "perfect" scores even though it has a very large number of bugs, clunky controls, a lot of ambiguity regarding who it's okay to shoot and what is okay to take/open, suffers from the R* lull (which is where R* games drag on to long so they can achieve 30-40 hrs of story), dated gameplay etc.

I recognize that it is an incredible open world game with beautiful design and the voice acting is top notch as well as having a great number of period details, diverse and cool wildlife, fun and diverse multiplayer (it really shines here) and a bunch of other awesome stuff but a "perfect" game it is not. I would give this game a 9/10 or a 4/5 depending on the scale yet it has a metascore of 95 with 13 perfect scores and then 99, 98, 97 . . and so on. I think the critics just freaked out because we finally have a really good western and they had to restrict their playtime to get their reviews in on time.

What're your thoughts everyone?

[Keep in mind that a perfect score means that it got the highest score possible not that the game is "perfect"]

I will repeat this once and again - no game will ever be "perfect" so having 10=perfect is absolutely pointless.
I think AngryJoe from TGWTG said that if the game is so good that the parts that shine make you overlook the small problems, it should get a ten.
So, yeah, haven't played RDR yet though.

I voted for the first option. That should tell you what I think.

Also, are you on the PS3? Because the patched 360 version works fine and dandy for me.

I agreed with Angry Joe's rating when he said it's legendary, in that all future games in the setting and genre will be compared to it.

Nothing will ever be "perfect" because perfection is not the same thing to everyone. All the time I have spent so far has been extremely enjoyable. What more can you ask for?

I have a new question, why is it that every time something nice comes along that is enjoyed by many people there will be people who it doesn't fully appeal to who call it over rated, and (I know you are not doing this OP, but it still happens) bash those that do like it?

I think the rating system is overrated...=/

Honestly, RDR is a great game, but it suffers from one nagging detail and that is it can get really, really, boring both with the story and the gameplay.

It suffers from the same problem I found in Fallout 3 in which you'll spend a large portion of the time wandering around wastela-errr desert looking for things to do, and unlike Fallout 3 you're not going to find some hidden vault full of clones or lost boys...lol

Another words no hidden secrets or treasures...=(

Hell, when it came to the story I didn't even know half the details of what was going on until it was explained to me near the ends but I will admit the ending really brought the game around and made me rethink of trading it in for something else.

No it isn't overrated. A 10 out of 10 or 5 out of 5 doesn't mean a game is technically flawless, because nothing is.

Reviewers review their experiences of a thing more than they review the technical achievements of the thing itself. And that's what we as consumers want, because we want to know if stuff is fun, not just that the controls are smooth as silk. Lots of unfun games have great controls. It's the experience something lets you have that matters.

What I'm saying is, take a break from RDR for a bit and buy Deadly Premonition.

I literally have no idea what you are talking about. I haven't had this much continuous fun with a game in years.

Fine. RDR isn't Halo or Modern Warfare. But some of us are okay with that...

I don't really pay attention to review scores anymore, so I really don't take no notice.

Rating systems of five or ten doesn't leave enough numbers. a five or ten rating doesn't mean it's perfect as been stated above, just really, really good. Which this game was.

Honestly, I think it's a bit overrated. A few flaws are fine, but when it seems that the game glitches often enough where it becomes a problem (as has happened to me a few times in the game), that should be considered. That being said, I think 'scoring' a game is foolish. Assigning a number value to a game doesn't work in my opinion.

If there was a game that I'd give my left nut to get, It'd be Red Dead Redemption on PC (please please please). Haven't played it, but it's the most interesting title that I can think of thats out at the moment. I loved Revolver, and I can't think of how this game could let anyone down in their expectations. If you go in expecting a perfect game, you're a fool. If you rate a game 'perfect' you're also a fool. Go in with your mind open.

Single player is good im enjoying it.

But what annoys me is the multiplayer free roam, i was expecting so much more, at least in GTA creativity wasn't a problem

I'd say it is perfect. I've been playing for around 20 hours and I've done only five missions. The controls, I admit are a little awkward at first but now they are just second nature.

Right, like just about any other game with so much that you're capable of doing.

And heck, if you've played GTA IV and Ocarina of Time (for the horse-y bits), you're already over halfway there.

Well, I'm only 54% though it, and it's my second favorite gaming experience on the 360 thus far (first being ME2) It's buggy sure, but I've had only one game breaking glitch since I started playing, I don't find the controls clunky at all, and I find the combat fun and rewarding.

Does it deserve a 10? Well...it's as perfect as a game can get I guess, it's definitely better than GTAIV and that got a 10 on most sites...

I am enjoying the game, I think it's review scores have been pretty accurate. It's not perfect but it's a damn good game!

I've spent the majority of the game wiping out the wildlife in the game, and I love doing it. It's so addictive its unreal. However perfection? it is not and as many posters have already stated, nothing is.
