Nope.

I bet we all thought we had seen the end of the Sinatra style, but then Michael Buble came around. It's just a different time, one that regrettably has lost most of its creativity. And yes, to all you guys and gals who listen to all of today's hits, they are not as creative as the music of yesteryear. Just listen to Pink Floyd, Genesis, YES, Queen ...

The artists of today are good, but they just don't compare.

Dead? No. Different? Yes. Some people don't like the changes others do. Its the nature of music.

I would not say it is dead, by any stretch. But I would say some of its best days are behind it. I mean, personally, Pink Floyd is my all time favorite band, and nothing else can really stack up to them. And I think that the spirit of driving guitar riffs and complicated drum beats has moved more into the metal genre, where as the lyrical creativity and melodic originallity of bands such as Zepplin and Pink Floyd has migrated into the indie/alternative genres. Thats just my opinion. Rock itself is not what it used to be, by any stretch of the imagination, but it is far from dead. And really, it depends on each person's definition of rock. If you're willing to cross far enough over genre lines, you can find beautiful rock music on the borders of the above mentioned genres.

First define rock n' roll... its pretty wide n' broad, ranging from Elvis, The Beatles, Rolling Stones etc...
There still is 'Rock n' Roll', its just different/modernised.
Does Velvet Relvolver count as Rn'R? Not really, its certainly Rock and certainly Rn'R inspired. Is Hendrix catagoried as Rn'R? Nope, but falls under the same space a Velvet Revolver as Rn'R inspired.

It's not dead, but what we call rock is changing and many of the older elements of rock are beign phased out at this point. No genre can stay the same forever without the populace getting bored. It's the same reason the pop scene switches every few years.

It appears to have completely lost it's sense of fun, and that's pretty tragic to me.

Dexter Romweber is about the only artist still going that I listen to regularly, and his style is deeply intrenched in 50's and 60's rock 'n' roll. I dig the 70's stuff, the 80's stuff makes me cringe, the 90's stuff has it's moments...I can't think what the 00's stuff even is. Unless it's "Nu-Metal", in which case...no thanks.

Modern rock sucks 99% of the time. Fuck Pitchfork indie shit. The only interesting stuff is happening in the metal underground.

Except QOTSA. Go QOTSA. <3

AC/DC classifies themselves as Rock and Roll and they're doing pretty well last time I checked.

It was either Eric Clapton or Pete Townshend who said about modern music that it was the same it had always been; about 95% crap and about 5% good stuff. People look fondly back on the music of yesteryear and see it with most of the 95% filtered out, thankfully forgotten to the ages. Look at the nominations for things like Grammy awards in the past though, you'll see that the same old crap was rampant in the top spots.

That being said, commercialisation has had a much bigger role in today's music which makes it so much easier for that 95%. But don't worry, the 5% is still there doing their thing and biding their time.

No. Rock and roll now is better than it's ever been if you ask me. It's just different now.

You're welcome.

Also, didn't vote, because I couldn't decide between 1 and 4 given that they're actually the same answer. Lesson for forum-goers: more poll options does not always make a poll better.
