Now before anyone goes postal, I am all for Final Fantasy 7 and well just about anything else that has Final Fantasy on it. This is not a hate piece. It's simply a question about opinion.

Anyways, does anyone else think that Square Enix is going a tad overboard with Final Fantasy 7? So far they have kept me happy, the original game, the movie, Dirge of Cereberus, and Crisis Core have all been enjoyable, but...is it a little much?

Maybe I shouldn't be asking because I loved all of these, but I'm curious. I mean I doubt that Crisis Core is going to be the last, at some point they'll come out with another game or movie, but I'm worrying that at some point they'll start destroying the FF7 love with overuse.

They have made a movie and the 3 games in ten years so I don't think so.

I can't be sure on that, but more than anything else I'm one of those who would be thrilled to see a modern generation adaption. Yes it would be time consuming and expensive, yes they could be making ANOTHER FF game (frankly I got bored after 9, but that's just me) but I'd be willing to risk popular opinion on the chance it will be a wonderful game.
The worst that could happen, it becomes another generic current-gen title that doesn't live up to expectations. Why am I willing to take the risk? It's Square Enix, one of the best game producers since ping met pong, and FFVII, one of the most beloved gaming universes of all time.

I'd call it a safe bet. Okay now I'm ranting, end transmission.

I've never understood the Final Fantasy VII-obsessed, myself. It was an okay game, I guess, except that the characters looked like Lego-people and the plot made no damned sense. Advent Children made even less sense (Negative sense? Is that possible?), and Dirge of Cerberus was a pile of ass with a side of...more ass. Seriously, it's time to move on already.

EDIT: Just thought I'd add this: http://www.spoonyexperiment.com/2007/09/12/final-fantasy-vii-review-part-6/

I don't get the FF7 lark. I have only ever met one person IRL that's been saying something along the lines of "oh mah god. I love FF& and clould is sooooo hot". I always preferred FFX and so do most of my friends.

I would like to see maybe a better film, only because i'd like to see my favourite characters develop a little further.

Now back to the real topic at hand, are they over doing it? Well yeah. After they released DoC and announce Crisis Core i began to worry.
FF7 will always have a power over people it seems. I mean there have been cults, and cosplayers a many where FF7 is mentioned.

But what Square Enix are effectively doing is digging up our childhood best friend 'Scruffy' the dog. Our memories of him are sweet and we miss him so, but digging him up will only reveal something twisted, decayed and rotten that is better left unseen.

10 million copies sold, being the Most Sold Final Fantasy game ever?
of course they are going to milk that cow.

Final Fantasy 7 is such an iconic video game that simply slapping FF7 on it can easily net you a few hundred thousand sales, even on a simple b-list level game.

Yes, enough already!
Yes let us quit tickling the balls of one of the most well known games in the entire world.

Seems like a completely reasonable suggestion ;).

Although I do agree I wish they'd just stop shitting in their britches and remaster FF7 already.

It wasn't my favorite (damn close) but it was the one I played the most. Also yes...I was one of the kids who cried when Aeris died.

The only reason I didn't cry and piss myself is because I got stuck and when looking to see why I was stuck the FAQ had in GIANT text "HOLY SHIT AERIS DIES! :((((((((((((("

But even with the warning (I didn't believe it, I was young and naive) it hurt my little heart.

A big Hell to the Yeah.

But at the same time I don't want it to turn into a franchise on it's own and become bloated with sub-par properties.

The original game and crisis core were good but you just have to let some things die, because sooner or later square enix is going to do something to annoy the fans and final fantasy 7 will lose it's fanbase.

Hey man, I think a remaster of 7 would be great. Especially like two years ago for a tenth anniversary. But some of the spin-offs were a bit much. I happened to really enjoy th movie and Crisis Core, but Dirge was a bit.....lack-luster.

Oh well. Maybe they will do a 15th anniversary thing when it comes around. Here's hoping, eh?

I actually thought FFX was better, too. That's the one that got me into FF in the first place. It gets bonus points for having a comprehensible story. (Now X-2, on the other hand...)

You get many cookies!

You ended your post exactly how I was going to end mine, but alas I changed my mind.

Don't get me started on FFX-2. Similarly to you FFX was what got me into the series. I remember going out to buy FFX-2 coming home slapping it in the PS2 only to exclaim "what the hell is this."

That was a bad game more disappointing than bad though.

I think they've lost sight of why the first game was so great. Looking at the spinoffs it seems like they haven't actually PLAYED Final Fantasy 7 in the number of years since its release, because none of these seem to match the tone. They have the broad strokes down, sure enough. Cloud's there, Zack's there, Sephiroth's there, Aeris is there, the Turks are there, and so on. I especially liked Hojo's role in Dirge; I wish it hadn't been wasted on such a mediocre game. But in general it seems like everything about FF7 has turned extremely melancholy--when the original always had a ton of really crazy humor and colorful visuals--and like the ultra-exaggerated action of Advent Children has overshadowed a lot of the more subtle elements of the original game, especially the charm of its setting, which I always thought was a lot more fascinating than ANY of the characters. It's a world I keep wanting to explore and a world they keep ignoring most of. They've developed a strong, superficial "wow" factor that definitely entertains and is pervasive throughout all of their games, but it's like they forgot that the story was bigger than its main character and his nemesis.

It was good, I'll give it that, but I think it's outlived it's glory days by a couple of years.

Just let it stay in the past.
As a good game for it's time.
