Yup.

It does have it's annoyances. The automatic updates in particular can cause problems. Plus I've heard a few horror stories of people losing their accounts.

But on the other hand, dude, have you seen the specials they have on there?

Honestly, if you can avoid it I suggest doing so.

The problem really isnt with Steam as much as it is with the negatives of digital distribution.

Here it is.. in Black and white... Or well Red and Blue respectively.

This is how steam views how your spending your money through them. Note in red it is "Licenses and subscriptions" Not titles , Not games owned. In blue it claims "acquisition method" which is because they will not call it a purchase because purchase implies you own something. If you do it, do it knowing that crucial fact that at the companies discretion they can void and remove your account without remuneration on anything you purchase.

So yes, Avoid it where you can and when you can because.....

"The game is a lie"
That is no different than physical copies of games today. You don't own anything when you buy the disc either because you are forced to log on to Steam if you are lucky, or GFWL or some other system if you aren't, and be constantly connected. Just look at the people who got locked out of retail copies of Dragon Age 2 when it was launched.

Yes, that is my point exactly. Not only is it so common it is practically a standard to which you can barely avoid it, but its also changing the way other organizations do business and what has fueled this notion of "Games are not a product they are a subscription" garbage.

Now granted that does not inherently apply to GFWL, EA, or the rare case like CDproject And in the case of physical media, sure you might have to do an initial activation, but once thats completed your typically not required to have consistent DRM connection, and theres nothing those arrangements do that can remove your ability to play what you have purchased just because you decided to be a prick and piss the publisher off.

Thats why I suggest NOT going for steam. Granted there are some titles that you can justify. Such as anything from Valve for obvious reasons. Also indie titles you will get no where else. Basically my rule of thumb is do not invest more into steam than your willing to loose, sort of like loaning money to family.

It's up to you whether it's worth getting Steam. Though this forum is a bad place to ask, it's flooded with Valve/Steam fanboys. There are a few Steam exclusive games and a few good sales on Steam. Just remember a few things: Steam can be a little unstable and buggy sometimes, regular prices on games are sometimes more expensive there, and Steam games are not fully yours since though it's rare Steam can ban you from your account if they think it's been hacked or for other reasons at their discretion.

Steam is a necessary evil. I'd prefer if it wasn't mandatory, but it'd split the games. Get it for the deals, buy anything you can on hard copy, unless there's a good deal.

Read better. I'm not calling Steam evil. I use it myself for a few games. But, I also know it's not perfect. And, all my purchases I keep to under $10. I've had a friend loose a few hundred dollars worth of games on an account he was banned from. I've had Steam refuse to let me play a few games in offline mode as it should. I'm not some rabid hater, but I'm not some petty fanboy either like you seem to be when you get pissed just because I wrote some facts you did not like.

It's free. There's no reason not to unless you're computer has no RAM. I honestly don't understand why anybody wouldn't like steam. It's not inconvenient at all, it's awesome.

Even if you don't want to buy anything, you can play a whole bunch of demos and even get access to free weekends.

Now that F2P Team Fortress 2 is upon us... Oh, yeah, it's only gonna get better.

Edit: It just dawned on me that this thread reminds me of advertisement. ...I feel used.

I'm sorry that you're having trouble getting steam to work. It's really great, the sales they have can be ridiculous. Like during the summer sale (which ends tomorrow unfortunately) I've bought;

Alpha Protocol
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Batman Arkham Asylum
Bioshock 2
Fate of the World
Hitman: Blood Money
Knights of the Old Republic (yes, I've seriously never played it, /shame)
and Universe Sandbox

Costing me in total...about $40 to $45. People paid more than that to play Duke Nukem Forever. I'm gonna be set on games for the next YEAR.

Steam and I have had our ups and down but I couldn't imagine life without it. Much like my ex.
Its just so damn convenient and everything it offers is so cheap. Again, much like my ex!

Depends how good your internet connection is. If, like me, you're stuck with a slow 256k connection, then the incredible sales and constant updates to gams like Team Fortress 2 and Garry's Mod will be more infuriating than exciting. Otherwise, yeah go for it.

The only issue I've ever had with steam is having to be online to long on to offline mode (you tell me how that works.) But aside from hat, I find steam highly useful.
i've never understood why you had to be online to go offline, it just doesn't make any sense, that was the only thing about Steam i really despise.

Got a few games for probably more than 75% off, ahhhh, that's a ten-four good buddy.
Exactly why Steam is worth the trouble to install... I've been busy in school the last few years, so have not had the time to game.

Mass Effect: $5
ME2: $7.99
Fallout 3: $10
Torchlight: $5
Oblivion: $5

$32.99 for those 5? That's some good gaming for minimal price. Heck, Duke4 is also on for 50% off right now... not sure it's worth that much, but I'll find out.

My laptop has an integrated video card, so I'm not a PC gamer. If I had a PC that could run decent games, I would definitely get Steam. It seems like the best deal out there if you're a big gamer
