I've seen it all over the place on just about every message board that has to do with gaming: Gaming is on a downward slide thanks to Call of Duty, Battlefield, etc. What do you guys think?

No, it's not. Games are selling more then ever, and while their maybe many Military FPSs there is also many other types of games that are thriving.

This past year has been one of my favourites in ages as a PC gamer with so many high-quality releases that for a poor schmuck like me it's just impossible to keep up, even with STEAM and other digital distributors being merciful and tossing sales and such my way.

Nah, don't pay attention to the hearsay. Everyone always says things are getting worse and seemingly 99% of the time it's just nostalgia. Call of Duty is hardly the first game series to become a popular phenomenon and milk it for all its worth after all, these things come and go all the time.

Why is it so popular to declare the end of gaming? All you mention is that games like Call of Duty and Battlefield are putting gaming on a "downward slide", without any actual argument to support these claims im going to assume you just read some comment or article about how gaming "stagnating" and are just blindly copying the writers opinion to make yourself appear smart.

And no Gaming is not deteriorating, Its as good, and in many ways better than its ever been

I disagree. Modern military shooters (MMS) have a large fan base and thats a good thing, like any genre it has a place in the industry. MMS just happens to be probably the most popular gaming genre right now. There is still room for all other kinds of genres like puzzle games (Portal), Real time strategy games (Dawn of war 2 and starcraft 2), Fantasy roleplaying games (Dragon age and Elder scrolls), creative building games (Minecraft and Terraria), and platformers (Super mario)

I play battlefield 3 on occasion and I have some great fun with it, I highly recommend the game as a more tactical team based multiplayer game but I play other games too. I probably like fantasy games like Skyrim and Dark souls more because I like to roleplay in my games but I can still enjoy a good MMS

Independent companies are also becoming more popular due to digital distribution like STEAM and there are some amazing indie games out there like Cthulu saves the world and Sanctum. Sadly indie companies just dont have the marketing power of AAA MMS titles so they dont get sold as much since people usually dont hear about them.

To be fair, because of MMS some developers starting thinking things like "FPS without competitive multiplayer will not sell in this day". However games like Fallout and Skyrim have proven them largely wrong. If developers make quality games and get the word out they will sell very well.

I think its worth saying that if people enjoy MMS, let them. Theres nothing wrong with enjoying a genre of game and to take such enjoyment away from a person is snobbish IMO

I never said that I agree with that sentiment. It's just that alot of people are saying that the extreme popularity of Call of Duty and Battlefield are bad for the industry. I happen to own and paly both of the latest versions in both series and I love to play them (CoD especially). I couldn't disagree more with the whole "stagnation" arguement. Those franchises are good for the gaming industry. I just wanted to see what other people think on this site.

Hell to the no.

Every media has an area devoted to mass market appeal.

Just at look at movies, TV, books, music, all these outlets have something that appeals to the mass market, despite being frowned upon by people who are more experienced with the intricacies of the media.

TV has reality TV, movies have the likes of the Transformers movies, music has boy bands, books have Twilight.

It's an inevitable consequence of popularity.

Call of Duty is successful so what it's an easily grasped game therefore a lot of people play it, it's no different then the summer blockbusters. Plus this is the largest I've seen the indie industry with games like Bastion, Terriria, Cavestory and Minecraft being so successful it's likely that we'll soon see large budget creative ventures from some of this companies.

Thing is, movies also have their Black Swan and Children of Men. Books have their Tolstoy and Pratchett.

Games have... what exactly?

Planescape Torment, Shadow of the Colossus, Okami.

Sure these titles aren't comparable to the greatest books and movies, but gaming is a lot younger than those things.

We'll have our time, don't worry about that.

Games have Bastion, LA Noire, Portal. Those three are some of the best storytelling experiences I have had. You cannot of told those storys without it being interactive.

OT:No it is not deteriorating. Gaming is more popular now than ever. If say a game like Bastion or Minecraft would of came out in 1990 or so. They wouldn't of sold many copies at all and would've been forgotten in a year. Now Minecraft is one of the most popular games around with barely any advertising budget. Times are getting better, definitely not worse.

My face when I read the title of this thread:

Seriously, just...what? A few relatively generic AAA games (which, by the way, has been happening every year for the last decade or so) and a few forum posts pointing them out are making you think video games are dying? You don't even try to look for non-AAA games, do you? I hate to sound so snobby, but you clearly don't know much about games or what the games industry even looks like right now. If you can look at two games and completely ignore the widespread availablity of indie games through digital distribution like Steam, the explosion of iOS and Android games, and ever growing gaming community as a whole (which includes the increasing number of community movements and events, such as conventions, TV specials, TV channels, and awards and recognition shows) then I think you really need to widen your search for information a bit. A couple of bad games =/= the death of a multi-billion dollar industry.

Granted, it took film over a century to put out Black Swan and Children of Men. Video games as we know them have been around since, what, the 80s? That's 30 years. And 3D didn't hit it big til 15 years ago. At this point in the film industry, they're only just about to come out with King Kong, Scarface, Dracula, and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. And Citizen Kane is still 10 years away. So geez, man. Chill out. Give us some time to gain our bearings and figure out what we are and what we're capable of.

Here's a tip, don't even look at anything made by Activision and EA and you'll seen nothing but goodness
You mean: don't look at the two biggest game studios? That is more difficult than it sounds.

You can add Ubisoft to the mix to make things worse.

But yes, under a rock you might find an unpolished jewel of an indie game. There is hope still...

Patrick Buck said:
The industry is growing, but for the wrong reasons. *Cough* Call of duty *cough*
Indeed, but it is a bit more complicated than that. Games are becoming more mainstream. Studios are tapping into new markets. With the Nintendo Wii you got casual gamers hooked, with Facebook you got a new breed of social games, with the iPhone you got a new generation of mobile games, etcetera.

And then the other studios are looking at the successes and think: "Holy crap that is a booming business. We should try that." And thus the Playstation Move and Xbox Kinect are born. And in the land of social games, ripoff games spawn on a weekly basis.

Now all this isn't necessarily bad. That the game market is expanding is actually a good thing. But what is a disturbing development is that "old school" studios are converting to the new age and changing their (core) values to appeal to new markets. I can understand why they do this, but I just wish some of them would commit to their existing fan base. But everyone is getting drunk in the new wave of games that are easier to make and that are producing more income. In the most extreme case that would mean the end of (J)RPG games, because they are just too expensive to make. In Hollywood terms we would drop Fantasy and Sci-Fi movies for comedies. Because everyone is going to see comedies anyhow. Seeing as comedies are cheaper to make, it would be logical (financially) to focus on that. Unless you can "pull another Avatar out of your ass".

PS. This wasn't directed at just your reply. I was talking in general here.

Well lets see last years good games we had:

-Skyrim
-Terraria
-Total war Shogun 2
-Arkham city

And those are the ones I can think of within the 5 mins I spent writing this post

And yes I Disapprove of the Copy/paste Military FPS Genre but still they aren't terrible, repetitive yes, but not terrible :/
