Those are tanuki, actually (and they're more dog than raccoon). It's a really long story, but for some reason tanuki balls feature in Japanese folk tales. So either there's something we don't know yet, or they've been crazy since before we started wearing clothes to battle.

Ah, I remember this. Cat Shit One is a unit in a manga called "Apocalypse Meow", set during the Vietnam war. Which was relatively awesome and probably the only manga I ever, ever liked. Since it mostly involved the Americans and all.

Why they'd set it in the Middle East is beyond me. Back. To. Vietnam. Now. Go. Go. Back to an interesting setting.
