I'm a star trek fan, I am offended by the fact that they are doing a movie like the one coming out, but that got me thinking... are movie producers just going to keep making movies of things we grew up with and adored, ie the star trek movie, GI joe, (if you haven't seen the preview go whatch it might make you cry), and transformers. I feel like everything I grew up with is being warped into a hollywood movie thats crappy, any thoughts?

Need an option saying: "I don't think they NEED to make them, but I don't take issue with them"

Transformers was good! I actually really liked that film.

I think, if the re-make is good, I won't have a problem with it. If a remake is of a horror film, they always end badly so I would have a problem with it.

I don't really mind, the new Star Trek film is..I am not actually sure what I think of that yet, still have yet to see it.

The Hollywood universe tends to cock things up. That's why most good movies go to the Sundance festival. At least you know that once a year, a really good movie comes out.

Its always easier to receive funding for films if it is based on an already proven franchise. The point of movies is to reach the fans and hopefully gain new ones who will buy merchandise and the DVD hopefully on release.

With Transformers they got all the fans on board with Peter Cullen reprising his role. Thus they were able to have Collectors and new kid fans buying the toys.

they definitely don't NEED TO, but I can see the allure of doing so.

You want people to see your movie so you can earn income. You can either
A) make something entirely new and original, BUT you'll have to do some major marketing to let people know what it is and why they should see it.

or

B) remake something that's already popular. No explanation needed. You are nearly assured that people will see it, if only to complain about it later on their personal blog (free publicity!). (and if by some miricle you happen to make a decent/memorable movie: bonus)

If you want to earn your investment back and feed your family, B is clearly the way to go.

If the movies good there's no reason not to make it, and is the star trek movie bad because i've only heard good things about it

Obviously they don't need to make them but I don't see Hollywood stopping this trend anytime soon, so best thing to do is to go, turn off your higher brain levels and enjoy the film.

There was a series of Star Trek movie too, just so you're aware. You're not one of these [http://www.theonion.com/content/video/trekkies_bash_new_star_trek_film?utm_source=a-section] people are you?

Also, a good movie is a good movie. Source material doesn't matter.

Remakes are clearly the trend right now, but this was also the case with earlier films. In fact, it's rare to see a truly original film, most films are based off a novel, comic book, television series, or even older films. I challenge you to find ten original films without the use of the internet.

According to IMDB rumors abound of a Thundercats movie being released in 2010.
Look up fan trailers for movies based off these things. Especially thundercats they're hilarious.
Remakes aren't a 'right now' thing. Spinoffs, remakes, and 'reinterpretations' have been around for a long time.

I hope that GI Joe movie has the 'knowledge is power' segment after the credits.

I want to see Silverhawks movie. Mostly cuz I want to see what hot young actress they'll get to play 'Steelheart' and put in a silvery bodystocking.

The trouble is that the audience has grown accustomed to seeing large volumes of homogenized crap, and now they want it all the time, every time. With everything. So expect to see more well loved icons being boiled down into the pap that most people can stomach.

And Hollywood makin' buck from most of it. I say most cause I hear DBZ the movie was a cop-out.

right i just watched gi joe the trailer, was gi joe always so high tech? Accelerator suits, ninja's.
Does seem like a decent popcorn flick though.

also i watched the transformer movie trailer and they need to focus more on the robots instead of pretty actors pretending to be high schoolers

No issue from me so long as they do it correctly, and I have pretty high standards for something to be deemed "done correctly".

Case and point, Transformers was NOT done correctly. So long as they don't rely on CGI and T&A from some young hot actress in the new Star Trek fan, it gets points in my book.

Weren't there SEVERAL PREVIOUS Star Trek films? ... Yes my lil bro's name is James Kirk... what of it?

On topic: Media sometimes needs re-enactments to stay relevant or interesting to audiences. For example- I like the 1960's Lawrence of Arabia more than the silent.

I just don't see why they didn't make an original sci-fi instead of basing it on an old idea they have little chance of replicating.
