I was reading an article yesterday about the Wii, needless to say it got plenty of hate in the comments section. But a few posts between me and Treblaine got me wondering about Wii Sports.

The stand alone sales of Wii Sport have been incredibly low, very few people have seen wii-ports on the shelf and bought it.
Do you not think that maybe, just maybe, this has something to do with what you said one sentence ago:

because it was BUNDLED WITH THE CONSOLE
My point still stands that people should not read too much into the success of Wii Sports as no one or very few ACTUALLY buy it. There is nothing particularly special about Wii Sports, only how the masses are drawn to the novelty of the Wii yet people interpret this via sales figures as them "voting with their wallets" for Wii Sports.

It is utterly flawed reasoning to justify shovel-ware and shows a monumental misunderstanding of basic statistics to try and figure out what it is that Wii Sports does right to explain it's success. The ONLY explanation for it's success if because it is bundled with unique hardware!!!!

The same applies for Wii Play, the second highest selling Wii game only that is because every single Wii-remote that is sold separately COMES BUNDLED WITH WII PLAY!

No one should interpret the high sales of Wii Play as indicative of what the market wants in terms of software... it ONLY indicates their taste in HARDWARE, that 25 million Wii owners wanted as 2nd Wii-mote. They may settle for the bundled software.

This is like saying that Windows Explorer is the best web browser... but that's just because it is bundled with every copy of windows, the most popular operating system.
Basically, is Wii Sports worth playing or is it just something that comes with the console for you to play until you get something better?

Personally, I find it quite a fun party game but admittedly I do have other party games that I prefer...

No hate comments about the Wii! Only about Wii Sports. ;)

games like this make me wonder
price of
wii- 200 euros
extra controller- 40 euros

football, hockey sticks, and other sports mallarky: 100 euro's max.

why?

same for guitar hero,
although a bass is of course more expensive, and more awesome.
and mine is red.

Make sure that you're not stansding undr a light while playing.

My brother bent ours and my friend broke his.
Haha. The whole family was round playing my Wii Sports at my Nan's. My cousin almost broke the light with a slightly... Ambitious swing and then following lecturing him about being more careful my mum destroyed the light completely with an even more powerful swing.

Wii Sports might look like it's free but you lose all your money in lights, controllers and eye balls whenever anyone wants to play tennis... :/

Yep, nothing more fun than Wii-Boxing some chick... except maybe getting a good Rock-Band Party going...
(Coming from someone who hates rhythm games...)

It is fun. It's not an amazing game, and it is admittedly more of a novelty than anything else, but it was an early Wii game that was bundled with the console. At the beginning of something as innovative as the Wii, we don't expect much more than that: we just want to see what the system can do and have fun with it, and that's exactly what Wii Sports delivered.

It's basically a tech demo. A very FUN tech demo nonetheless; I had many fun times with my junior-year suitemates arguing over Wii Bowling.

At a party, hell yes. Our student guild has it set up in the bar, me and my mates play it a lot. The only problem is that, unless you have a large group together, and 2-4 controllers, it can get boring.

It's fun for 2 months, 1 week, 4 days, 6 hours, 37 minutes and 18 seconds.

After that it desolves into a craptacular shitefest.

It's epic for parties. It can get kind of addictive on it's own if you REALLY like golf.... (I'm looking at you dad, having your mid-life crisis..)

Wii Sports Resort is actually worth the money though, fantastic party game, even better if you're drunk. Bowling is impossible!

It's fun for a while. Bowling is one of the few games worth playing on it after a while.

And, just a slight correction: Wii Sports wasn't bundled with the Wii in Japan. Everywhere else, yeah, but not Japan.

Wii Sports is gangs of fun, there's a little something for everyone. Easily, Bowling was the most played amongst my friends and I when I first bought my Wii. Pretty much what you see is literally what you're getting. Golf is golf, Tennis is Tennis, Baseball is simplified batting-only Baseball, Boxing had more potential.

Even though it (Wii Boxing) was a little unresponsive, I had great fun with it. I had hoped they would have fine tuned it for Wii Sports Resort but we got something better instead: Swordplay.

They're great games, in small doses. However, extended playthroughs may get tiring after a while. Resort is the superior game though.
