I heard this so many times in the past 4 years...
EvE will butt rape WoW!
But... EVE came out BEFORE WoW... o,O
Not only did EvE come before WoW, they're completely different. Since one is fantasy and the other is sci-fi based.
Which believe it or not has a pretty big effect on its demographic.

WoW won't be toppled by any MMO untill MMOs actually have a new generation, rather than the:
Ever more desperately franchised WoW clones with a few actually original but very niche games generation they have right now.

WoW will get a run for its money when it stops to be supported, or its fans absolutely grow tired of playing it...which would take ages with so many players.

You can't really "kill" an MMO, but you can become the new big boy. Honestly no game will seriously compete with WoW until it both has a quality design team with a free hand, and a budget at least equal to the one WoW was developed on for the current economy/value of currency.

Fly by night MMOs aren't going to be able to do it. Games like "Age Of Conan" had the potential but did not have the budget, development time, or perhaps the people to do it. Age Of Conan was a mere shadow of what it was supposed to be when planned initially.

Warhammer was doomed from the beginning for similar reasons to Age Of Conan, combined with a lack of planning. They should have seen how things were going to turn out when the interest in "Destruction" turned out so high both in forums and through the "Road To WAR" promotion. Without balanced sides I think they got themselves nuked right at the starting line.

Knights Of The Old Republic has the potential to be the next big one, BUT it's making similar mistakes. Right now the game seems to be afflicted with "Sith Mania", and that goes for the design team/game concept as well. As a result I think more time and effort is being put into the bad guys and making them "soooper awesome". So in the end your going to see a bajillion people playing Sith compared to Jedi, and the Sith having been made a lot cooler/better performance wise, despite the fact that the Sith are supposed to be on the verge of getting WTFpwned so hard that a few thousand years later nobody will even know what a Sith was for sure.

I also do not know what their budget is, but they DO have Bioware who are talented developers like Blizzard. I think they are simply suffering from lack of foresight in design.

DC Heroes and Champions Online are coming out also, but I think super-hero MMOs are definatly a niche market and aren't even intended to play at the WoW-level.

I think WOW will go the way of the СССР.
I agree :p

New MMOs should NOT even try to directly compete with WoW. Companies forget the MMOs have various niches, a lot (like sci-fi) are often ignored. Now I hate fantasy games with a passion but I still found myself addicted to WoW (2 years clean), that's the thing about WoW.. its so broad reaching that many people including tons of non-gamers found their way to it.

Seriously, are you gonna compete with a low spec hybrid game with an admittedly awesome artistic style with a heavy engined hog spouting unbelievably bland realism? I think not good sir, I think not indeed.

WoW is like MS Windows, nothing will destroy it in the foreseeable future despite many of the other options being objectively superior. Every now and then a new title will come along and take a chunk of the user base, but with all the incentives for recruiting friends the population will continue growing.

When I played WoW, thats what everyone said about EVE, Age of Conan and Warhammer online. Look how it has affected WoW, thats right it hasn't. I don't care if WoW loses players, other than the fact it might delay funding to Starcraft II and Diablo III!!!!

These huge polls with yes/no qyestions and samey wishywashy answers make me lol a little..

on topic - maybe, but it's like the lilliputs, There's no way they could take down gulliver all by themselves.. but as a whole, they can put him down.

That being said, I doubt anything will "Kill WoW" for years to come.. but it's good for Blizzard to lose some ground to other games.. LOTRO, DDO, the rest.. bring them on, let players play them, and let them thrive.. there's plenty to go around.

Funny how WOW is so popular but I found it be be one of the least compelling MMO's I have played.

A bunch of boring generic classes, ugly graphics and gameplay dumbed down and stripped stright out of everquest.

I stopped playing quite a while ago but from what I understand everyone is a deathknight now? (yawn)

Wow, is the perfect example. Just because something is popular doesnt always mean it's a superior product.

The Original EQ is still going pretty strong from what I can see, and WOW was supposed to put it in it's grave. The same thing will occur with WOW, it will probably be going forever.

WoW took everything EQ did right, and notched the user-friendliness up by 100 notches. I don't have a long pedantic rant about why I don't play WoW anymore, it just got boring.. but games are subjective, and I'm not so arrogant as to say that because I don't like something, it's obviously an inferior product.

Yawn all you like, makes you look like Mr Howell though.

Me and my friend (who play WoW) recently heard about a game coming out in a disclosed period of time called Mortal Online and for a while me and him have been decently hardcore with our playings of WoW and now that this new game is coming out my friend wants to just drop everything on WoW to play Mortal and, while from what ive seen/heard/read Mortal LOOKS like its a MUCH MUCH MUCH better game and MUCH more realistic BUT I have a hard time deciding, is it worth quitting WoW? I say this because I don't even know what this game might be like and I have MANY friends on WoW so should I just get rid of em cuz' my friends telling me about a better game. If anybody has any info on Mortal or would like to Discuss what they think of it/ what will become of WoW would be much appreciated.
Should you quit WoW? YES
Should you go play another grindfest? NO

I think any MMO being produced in the current era that is being marketed as a WoW killer will likely fail. You don't necessarily have to compete with WoW, MMO's can survive on a fairly low number of subscribers if the game developers are realistic when it comes to the potential profitability of the game. Blizzard themselves are I think dumbfounded by the success of WoW.

Warhammer online does interest me to some degree, but the game doesn't even have a convenient enough free trial on offer yet for me to even bother. Plus I would have honestly preferred a warhammer 40k MMO just to escape from the fantasy genre already.

Just me?
...okay.

I think Wow is just too good to die any time soon. Dont get me wrong,it will die eventually but it will be a slow, lumbering death, with blizzard squeezing ever penny out of the franchise before the mercifully euthanising it when there are 7 subscribers left.
You are not alone buddy :p

I have to agree with you with Wow though give it until Guild wars 2 comes out, THAT will sting them, save players a bundle too.

It's just popular, if you get "12 million" people saying anything is "good" most people will listen, believe them, and join the band wagon wanting to believe it is good because they don't want to stand out and get hammered

Indeed it does. However, realism doesn't work with MMO's. Realism usually means high end graphics. High end graphics means cutting your market because not everyone has a high end computer, and a game with big graphics often uses it as a selling point. When you have an MMO, you want the biggest market you can possibly have and WoW did that. It looks good enough. Not top notch, but it works.

Of course, you're right. One person's like for a dev won't turn the tide against WoW.

But it's not just me. Ask anyone what their top 10 games are, and you can bet that most of them will have KOTOR on that list. On the dev site, they said that TOR will have more story content than all other BioWare games put together. Do you know what they're claiming? We're talking hundreds of hours of story per class. And each story will be different; each class (neither side shares them) is getting its own KOTOR. This is a narrative MMO, something much different than anything to come before it. Besides, a bad Star Wars MMO has already been made, and there is no better teacher than failure.

I'm sure you think me an idealist, but I think that my faith in TOR will be justified when it comes out.
If you hang arround alot near bioware forums, the demographic will be considerable skewed towards liking bioware games, otherwise people wouldn't be on their forums. This doesn't hold up to the general population, where kotor is largely unknown. Just like "your favourite game" polls on AoC forums invariable end up with 95% of the votes going to aoc and DNF query's on "most anticipated game" is always topped by DNF. I did what you suggested and asked all the known gamers at my school about their favourite games and only got a single mention of bioware(mass effect to be exact) and blizzard got in a total of 63 mentions(9 for diablo II, 14 for starcraft, 19 for warcraft III and 21 for WoW).

My last point is that claims like 1k+ hours of narative are seldom followed up on, take a look at darkfail's "goal" of "changing the way mmo's are played, forever" and how they ended up being a lame eve wannabe, only with less space and more brown grass.

LMAO

almost thought this was sarcasm. an elder scrolls MMO is the best type of MMO there could be and a typical MMO is the worst.
Regardless of anyone's preference, what I'm saying is that this is not a WoW substitute. It's not even the same type of game.
I agree but that's not a reason for it not to succeed, in fact the opposite. if anything is going to do well in the current mmo market its something different from its competitors, ie not another wow clone. I'm not another naive fan who thinks it will "kill wow", nothing will, a MMO doesn't have to beat wow to succeed. people need to stop obsessing with wow.

Honestly, if there is any other MMO that could even make a dent in WoW's, as Yahztee Croshaw put it, monolithic market share, it'd probably be Warhammer Online or Lord of the Rings Online.

So, to answer, no.

Ok, remember how much people drooled when they saw Age of Conan screenshots, only to actually play it and see it was pretty shitty? Remember how much of a fuss there was on the forums about how Warhammer Online will "kill wow"? Remember the fuss about Darkfall?

What I'm trying to say is that WoW will never "be in danger". It's to stable for such a thing to happen. It has a huge player-base(13 million almost?). And 13 million players don't just stop playing a game.
