All I can really say is to do your research on what you're getting into.

To my best effort at objective speaking, It's an above-average MMO piloted around a sturdy system of "grind" mechanics; Starting small and becoming more experienced to take on the bigger challange the more you play. It comes with an economy, a community, and the feeling of being part of an entity bigger-then-you, while finding entertainment in warping that entity to your advantage with branching pastimes of "Raiding", "PvP", or Economy-screwing. Since most of the game is already at the higher stages of this process, you have to tackle the Level 1 to 80 climb to reach the seemingly-more "enjoyable" points.

To a subjective free-thinking pessimist, it's a massive timesink that nerds play.

Your call on if all of that is worth the 15 a month, along with purchasing the discs.

I have given WoW up quite a few times now and even gave my accounts away and went to new MMO's but have just gone and bought it again a yesterday from an online store and am now waiting for it to arrive while I level up on the trial.
I am waiting for SW:ToR to come out and have played a couple of other MMO's to endgame since quitting WoW but it just keeps pulling me back in and with Cataclysm not far off I shall get a couple of characters to 80 before it's release and enjoy replaying the game from a fresh start.

The only way you can judge the game is by trying it for yourself and you will either love it or hate it. If you hate it, try something else, LotRO is going free to play soon which is worth checking out. If you love it and decide to play it more, you know you can always get friendly advice here ;)

Good luck anyway :)

Several million people seem to think that it is, in fact, worth it. So asking a message board seems sort of weird. But you should get a trial account and see how it feels.

It use to be back before Burning Crusade came out. Since then it has been ruined and catered to the casuals and addicts who can't/won't let it go.

I found WOW to be a wonderful game with it's wide range of emotion animations, exploring and quests but I got bored at level 28 or so because I couldn't explore the places I wanted to go had like level 40+ creature and I couldn't be stuffed leveling so I stopped.

oh and the reading I like reading the books and stuff in WOW but the quest got boring and I found myself go ok ok ok, then to kill 10 of this creature. The Quests needed to be more detailed and have more reason then this npc wants to make you a pie but they can't because they don't have 10 pigs hearths or whatever.

The only real way to see if it's worth it is to give it a shot yourself, I personally say yes because I have found a great guild that does raiding but also is really friendly and the gameplay itself is relatively enjoyable.

Also: The 'WoW is an addiction' statement is bullshit, people with addictive personalities get addicted, everyone else doesn't and people only think they do because there are so many people playing the game.

Yes, it's amazing, and refined and perfected in nearly every way. Millions love it. Millions hate it. So give it a try first, get the free trial or something. I personally enjoyed it to bits and the only reason I don't play is because something's up with my account.

World of Warcraft can be a lot of fun. Its got a fairly nice community within it, the gameplay's pretty easy to get to grips with and its got a fantastic load of backstory. For these reasons, I'd recommend it.

However, is it worth the monthly subscription, plus buying the game? Maybe not. It depends if you can afford to pay that sort of cash.

I think it's a good game, I enjoy it, and it's definately worth the cost as someone said above using Cinema Tickets (A method I'm fond of :D) It offers me more than 6 hours of entertainment a month so definately worth it in my opinion.

If you don't like social gaming though you'll find it boring.

$20 isnt alot when it comes down to it;
so long as you dont buy a game every week, WoW wont be overwhelming.

Now? No

When Cataclysm comes out? yeah, it's worth a look.

I've been playing since day one, and to be honest most other games I play are fun, but don't last. Wow is persistent and if you happen to meet some good folk there it's worth every penny. Playing it just to solo through content like another version of Elder Scrolls, yeah it'd be grindy and horrid. Try it out, join a levelling guild and enjoy, if you like it great, if it's not your cup of tea, no harm.

At the moment though levelling is a mess. You level faster than the game was originally designed for, and the oldest content just isn't as good. Wait till Catacylsm (later this year hopefully) and Blizz are redesiging the levelling process from scratch, should be much smoother and more fun.

Give it a go but know that it isn't what it used to be.

I stopped playing just after they released a single room as a raid. I mean they were lazy with re-skins before but an entire raid tier contained in one boring, circular hell-hole?

The last raid I enjoyed was Ulduar. That place was interesting. But to go from what Ulduar was to what ToGC was...

It was as if they'd gotten to the end of the day on friday and said "You know what? Fuck em. Let's just put all the bosses we've come up with into one room and they can have that."

/rant over, if you really want to enjoy it you'll probably want to join a good, friendly guild. This game is hardly anything without people to play it with.

No. Not unless you have a few close friends who play it, then I would consider recommending it for that reason alone.

Anyway, if you're interested in MMOs, consider something else instead of jumping on the WoWagon. It doesn't offer much besides an intense amount of grinding and a community with apathy as it's cornerstone.

Most MMOs have trials. Go ahead, splurge on them all.

I remember John Funk did an article on the value of a World of Warcraft subscription. Here it be. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/view-from-the-road/6500-A-View-From-the-Road-The-Subscription-Equation]

From memory, it was quite interesting.

Anyway, personally, I think it probably is worth it. I've never played the game, or really wanted to, but those who play it seem to have fun. So go for it. You have my blessing.

There is a 10 day free trial you can download which would be the best way to see if you like it.

But I hope you have a bit of free time... WoW takes forever to download and install.
Not anymore, the Trial takes about 10 minutes to install, the Trial downloads the information from the game unto your system.

OT: The trial might be a good idea, though it really doesn't show THAT much of the game. It's basically the first 20 levels, which are the most boring.

I'am thinking of getting WoW, but don't know if it's worth paying all that money for it. Is the game good enough to pay for every mounth? Tell me what you think.
Go to Guildwars2.com and read up on it and then wait for it to come out next year. or end of this year.

I think it is, though to be perfectly honest, I don't pay full fees cause I have a shared account :p

I really really enjoy it, and find it great if I have nothing to do or need to unwind.

That being said, check the trials of EVERY MMO YOU CAN FIND.
you might find that EVE tickles your fancy even more ^_^
