I have a '98 Ford Contour I bought used a little over 4 years ago for my first car. Since then I've gone through two batteries, two alternators, had the transmission rebuilt, motor mounts, timing belt, timing tensioner, idler pulley, and now it's back in the shop. It hasn't even been a full 10 days since it was in the shop for the timing belt/tensioner and alternator and it's making noises a car shouldn't be making.

Every time I start to get some money together and start entertaining notions of getting something that isn't held together with rust and prayers, it breaks down and I end up broke. I've put around $3,500-4,000 into it over the years and I'm hoping whatever is wrong with it now isn't expensive and the car will last long enough for me to save enough money to at least put a decent down payment on a newer car(probably a Honda or Toyota).

So what about you guys? How much have you had to put into repairs beyond the usual maintenance(oil change, air filter, spark plugs, etc...)? What kind of car are you thinking of getting to replace it?(if it isn't reliable)

I drive a 2006 Honda Civic and besides normal maintenance, nothing really. It's been very reliable since I've had it and I take extra good car of it since it's the first car I've purchased with my own money.

Considering the fact that it's in the junkyard because it bursted into flames while I was on the Highway due to a factory imperfection, I'm going with Hell NO!

I don't currently have a vehicle. Everything I need is within walking distance 1 to 2 miles, or less. I use my legs, and a utility cart. I enjoy walking and the fresh air.

Maybe I shouldn't have even bothered posting because I don't have a vehicle...oh well! TAKE MY POST!

My buses are actually quite reliable, yes. As for my car... it hasn't been used in over five years, so I'm not sure.

Most of my troubles in the past can be blamed on human (read "my") error. However, as I now have an understanding of intermediate maintenance, both my trucks are in perfect working order. I'd go with a Toyota. Also, do some research. Consumer Reports and other agencies have done good work on automobile reliability statistics.

Good luck to the OP.

It has been for the past 6 years but just recently, it's age and the fact the previous owner left a lot of crap for me to fix is starting to catch up with it.
I am currently on the fence between investing 1600 dollars in repairs for a vehicle I paid 900 dollars for, or getting a new one.
It is a 1996 Saturn SL1 with 116k miles on it.

My 2008 CBR125 has taken more abuse than a bike should ever have ever of taken and yet the engine still purrs like a dream!

My car runs as smooth as I could hope, save for one very aggravating problem: the right hand blinker randomly decides to stop working. And the repair centres can't find the problem. Plus, I live in Australia, so if I want to indicate that I'm pulling out from the curb, guess which blinker I'm relying on to not get me killed?

Holy hell man! That's one heck of a factory imperfection.

Taking the bus to work would take me almost two hours.

I plan on doing lots of research. That's actually part of my motivation in making this thread was to see what kind of cars people have that are reliable.

I had a Vauxhall Astra, and it was great! Very reliable! Only broke down once, and that was because it had had the same battery in its 8 year life! Unfortunately I crashed it!

Looking at getting a Mazda 6 next! I love the look, and heard they are pretty good!

The only reason my car still works is because it was my great grandmothers, so it had under 20000 miles when I got it. Although it had been out in the dust and sun for maybe a dozen years.

Good for you. Do that research! Now, since your interested, I have had perfect luck with my 04 F150 4x4 and my 08 Tundra SR5. Those are the vehicles I currently own. I had good luck with a 00 Chevy Cavalier that I bought in 07 with 140k already on it. Sold that one to my brother and it still runs. And I loved my 94 Pontiac Bonneville v6 but I rolled it into a bean field.

My old car [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.315830-Redlins-EXTREME-30K-Review-The-Geobat] was held together with duct tape and a prayer so it was a miracle it didn't die before I sold it.

Now my new car, a 2009 Nissan Versa, hasn't failed me yet.

And I didn't even get any money back, I know I bought the car used and that it was a frontier car, but I think I should have gotten some compensation though the fact that the car was originally from the USA and I live in México may have had something to do with it, *sigh* you don't even want to know how shitty that day was, needless to say I now travel by bus it's easier and you don't get forced to pay the police because of an accident that should be covered by the warranty of the toll highway.
[sub]Yes pretty much everything you've heard about how corrupt the Mexican police is, it's true, sadly.[/sub]
