I keep reading people saying do a Forum Search before you do a New Topic post. I think if people did this the forums would be a lot lonelier place because almost every New Topic post has been done before. Now I can understand more than one New Topic post that are the same within days of each. So is it just me to think it OK go over a topic that's been done before?

People can just necro the thread. It stops all the clutter of repeating threads over and over again.

In related news, hasn't this been done before?

Its not the fact its been done before, but when the same thread has been done just a week or so ago.

I thinnk most of the time that people say use the search bar is because its been done extremely recently.

People like to jump on the bandwagon and when they see a good idea afew days later they'll post it themselves.

Or in the case of some, 5 minutes...

Well, a lot of the threads that get people screaming SEARCH BUTTON are ones that crop up with monotonous regularity.

For example, anything with X vs Y
Why is Halo/CoD/FF/Half Life/Metal Gear/whatever so highly thought of?
Is X over rated?
Favourite console/controller/game within this set parameter/brand of soft drink.

These things crop up so often that after a couple of months you should be sick of seeing them, the answers don't change and neither do the flammable fan boys they attract.

I actually think this has been done before...
But yeah, some repeat thread are necessary as facts / opinions can change, and slight changes to the questions have to be changed. And its not like a thread owner to constantly update information after 1 or 2 months.
But sometimes its just overkill
Its really a matter of moderation, which is the task of, you guessed it, the mods.

If the topic has not been done in a while I think that redoing is alright. Now if there are like 50 of the same topic floating around, it gets annoying.

It's fine to create a new thread on a subject if the old thread is long dead. It starts being a problem when the people start posting the exact same topic within a couple minutes of each other, and the entire "what's new" section on our front page is dedicated to repeat threads.

Or when people create threads that mimic frontpage news posts. That get's annoying too, since they only had to scroll down to see that one.

As am I, the great thing about forums is that they are dynamic. If a thread has been done before no one will have anything to say, ignore it, move on and it will die in double time. By posting "use the search button" people are keeping that thread at the top, just don't do it.

...this thread has been done before.

But srsly, it is annoying when the people with over 9000 posts (sigh) reply to every second thread with "use the search button". Live and let live. After all, the rule about "vs." threads is rarely upheld, so I believe.

Yes, and people that where not around at the time of the last-one may have something to say about it.

Four days ago, a very similar topic was done.
It's not exactly the same, but you'll find some answers in there that explain why it is people tell you to use the forum search.

Edit:
I see why people get the most response out of saying "Use the Search Bar".
The quiet/informative method gathers no response.
...Apparently.

Depends on the topic.
I find it annoying when people recreate threads such as "Your Favourite Weapon" and "Favourite Game(s)".

Yeah, but then people don't understand why people are ignoring their thread and might continue to start "new" old threads, or they might be offended and leave forever...
