People can just necro the thread. It stops all the clutter of repeating threads over and over again.

In related news, hasn't this been done before?
Necro-ing is very annoying in my opinion, nothing is worse than having to go through dozens of pages to find the point of the thread. That said, I say a rule of thumb should be that you can necro threads until they get over a month old.

Time changes, which means that the context of discussion changes, which means that nothing can ever be repeated, unless all the people on the forum as stuck in some kind of time stasis...

Thing is, if people continuously necro threads then all threads will end up with about 50 pages of comments. So to me, redoing a thread a few months after the old one died isn't a bad thing.

Obviously the same thread in a few days is a bad thing, however.

This guy knows his stuff, and I agree, any more than 5 pages and I sloop.

Personally, it doesn't bother me when people redo a topic. If it's been done before and you don't like it, or don't want to contribute, hit the back button. Let people discuss what they want when they want. As long as I don't see the same discussion twice or three times on the first couple pages, do whatever makes ya happy.

Really, I wish people would shut up with the forum search comments.
It makes them sound like pompous gits.

new users always have new things to add, if no one re-posted old threads, then you would lose out on new users. There would also be a hell of a lot less threads anyway as pretty much everything will have already come up

You did one about which one was better didn't you? Yeah, I can see why that got locked.

Depends on what the topic is and how long ago it was last discussed.

If it's one of the "hot button" topics (including but not limited to WoW, Half Life, anime, JRPGs, and best/worst story/dialogue/character/muffin EVAR), no more than once every three weeks or so, really. If you're really curious to know what people think before then, suck it up and read the frackin' thread. No sense in restarting old, annoying arguments.

In fact, three weeks might really be the lower limit. There is no upper limit; I've never been on a forum that explicitly allowed thread necromancy like this one.

Nothing religious ever needs to be discussed on here again. Likewise, fanboy wars and "-insert game- is horrible" threads should also be done away with. Political topics also tend to degenerate fast. And weather topics. And topics about girls. And topics about boys. And topics about construction workers. And topics about labor unions. And topics about anything.

... Huh. Guess we're never gonna win, are we?

But seriously, posters that merely parrot Yahtzee's opinion without adding anything to the subject need to be hunted down and gagged. I heard Yahtzee say it the first time, thank you.

it annoys me when several threads about the same topic pop up in the space of a week, but if it has been a while it doesn't matter, better to restart than necro, get different people opinion.
