Whether it be carmel or caramel, I'm more interested in that first A. I've only heard Americans (on TV/in movies) pronounce the first syllable as car (as in the thing you drive). In Australia it's a shorter vowel like in the word carry. So I say carramel.

I pronounce it 'car-a-mel', because that way I use up all the letters. The only time it is acceptable to use the slurred form 'car-mel' is if you have a mouth full of caramel.
