Poll: I've ruined Mass Effect for myself :(

Hey everybody, I know that Mass Effect came out a while ago but I just started playing it a week ago. I rolled a soldier as my first character. Unfortunately, about 6 hours into the game I decided I wanted those cool biotic powers, so I rerolled as a Vanguard. Now the game feels boring as hell. Doing the citadel quests over again was a chore. Now I'm doing the sidequests before I continue the main story, and they're snoozeworthy as well. It feels like every sidequest involves driving the Mako over the same rocky color-swapped planet, fetching stuff from anomalies and debris before fighting a mako battle where the aiming sucks. Then, after doing all that boring stuff, if you're lucky you might get to go in on foot and shoot some fools. But as soon as you're done with that you have to sort through the loot you've won and figure out if you've gotten anything useful for your current party or anyone up in the Normandy.

I really wanted to like this game because Knights of the Old Republic is one of my favorite games of all time. At first Mass Effect felt like it was going to be another RPG masterpiece, but all this annoying crap, combined with my starting the game over and having to do the annoying crap TWICE, has ruined the game for me.

Any tips for moving things along in this game? I really want to enjoy it.

If you don't like the side quest then don't do them. Simple.
Just play the main story, its much better.

And welcome to the Escapist.

Just go through the game (till the point you stopped as a soldier) as fast as possible. (Use cheats to get there, god mode is a preference, once you get to that point just turn off the god mode.)

I completed Mass Effect and did EVERYTHING on it. Literally 100% of the game was done.

But that was back when my Internet was down. It's a good game, and if you really get into the story and back-story of the characters/races you can enjoy it a heck of a lot more. But I voted for "good but a little slow", because there's so much stuff to learn on it...

I felt guilty for reading up on how the Asari came about when there's so much more to learn about my own planet!

Oh yeah, and I played through as a Soldier and they get so overpowered it's mental. I'd say play as a soldier again, heh, but then again I'm a shooter fan.

i'd say don't bother with doing all the side quests unless you really want the achivment or to just take a break from the story as they're all the same.
just out of interest how far did you get in to the game before you went back?

Mass effects biggest mistake was that it was repetitive, especially the combat. you have a chose between 4 guns and only 4 guns and any upgrades are either texture replacements or slightly different models. I found the game good but could not make an apt decision on wether or not it was a good game without pointing this out. (i chose the middle option)

Being a soldier makes it easier overall, but if you want something different and more challenging I'd take biotics.

I loved the Biotics class. I dominated everyone. However, if your bored w/ the side quests you could try the main story.

Well, it's still more than in "Wolfenstein 3D", isn't it?

I found ME highly enjoyable, but have a similar thing to the OP - on my first play everything was great, I had buckets of fun... and then I hit one of the annoying bugs. Don't know if it was just my copy, or an issue with the PC version, or Vista compatibility issues, but a few times in the game choosing a specific dialogue line would crash the game. Made me repeat a whole boss fight once... And at one point, I just couldn't take it anymore when after 15 minutes of talking it crashed because I just said the wrong thing.

So it went away for a few months.

And then I was back, and... It wasn't nearly as enjoyable as the first time. I don't know, maybe it's because the world wasn't fresh anymore and exploring it just lost the element of excitement... Barely became a Spectre.

I'm gonna give the game one more go, and hopefully it will go smoother this time around.

I quite liked it the first playthrough, but there is no way I would replay it. A second playthrough would highlight all of its flaws, and I wouldn't enjoy it at all.

Its not a game that I can see myself playing in the future, unlike some of Biowares other efforts.

I thought it was an awesome experience.... though I could see how many people would get bored of exploring the other worlds... I didn't but I felt they could have done more with it.

I'm all about dialogue and story, so the talking never bothered me.. I plan on replaying as maybe a vanguard or something too.. so I guess we'll see.

I replayed the game 5 times in the first month of the game coming out. Much fun was had.

Bioware is the greatest RPG maker of all time, in my opinion.

I think the only problem is that you started again too soon. And soldier is the best class if you ask me.
I am on my 4th playthrough as a soldier, Have started with most of the other classes but havent finished most of them XD

A fresh male Shep sentinal the Paragon is the best thing to do insanity with, that is. if you hate yourself.

I loved it though.

I thought the game was brilliant. The only downfall, as I'm sure you've noticed are the sidequest planets and some of the side missions.

Anyway, I better leave before the inevitable Mako bashing starts in earnest.

*hugs Mako*

I may go back to it just before ME2 comes out, just to go over a few things, and hopefully hit level 60.
