I just recently got to play Mass Effect, myself. I really enjoyed the first play through as a Soldier, and since soldiers require less talent points I was able to take advantage of the Intimidate and Charm talents without affecting my class or requiring multiple play-throughs. Though my second play through was even more enjoyable as a Vanguard; Biotics truly are the best way to go for my play style.

I didn't get tired of the sidequests so much, and finished all of them on both playthroughs. Also, driving the mako didn't really bother me and I really enjoy the conversation bits just as much as the action segments. The only quests that I didn't bother with are the collection quests, but even then most of them completed themselves without the need to go out of my way.

I'm currently on my third play-through on Insanity with an Infiltrator, but I am thinking of starting over as an adept or another Vanguard; As much as I like sniper rifles, they are quite ineffective on insanity and biotics are vastly superior to tech abilities.

I'm certainly glad I waited this long to try out Mass Effect so there will be less time to wait for Mass Effect 2. I suggest you wait a bit then give Mass Effect another shot. The game is too good to miss out on, but you shouldn't force yourself to play it when you don't feel like it or you will only spoil the experience.

I've played through the game at least 5 times, and while I admit the side quests can be pretty repetetive, some of them can be a ton of fun (Cerberus, crazed biotics, etc.). If that doesn't appeal to you, then just play staight through the story missions - they're pretty awesome and have a great deal of variety as far as scenery and objectives are concerned.

Also, the achievements unlock in-game bonuses, so if you start as a solider and get 150 AR kills (easily done), you can make a new biotic that can use ARs. It can be pretty absurd to create soldiers w/ Singularity or biotics w/ shotguns - battles end up being clusterfucks of awesomeness.
